Skeeters are giant bugs that float on top of the water in Super Mario 64. There is a Skeeter on the painting of Wet-Dry World. They're based off actual Water strider bugs that move in the same fashion.

Skeeters reappear in New Super Mario Bros., although now they are coloured red. They can be found on top of water again, and will zip left and right across the water at high speeds. Jumping on them gives you a very high extra jump.
