The Vault Guard tells Mario about one of the items he is about to encounter later in his adventure.
“I'm standing guard!”
Vault Guard, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

The Vault Guard (or vault guard) is a Mushroom person in charge of guarding the treasury of the Mushroom Castle. In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the chancellor gives Mario access to the vault to help him in his quest to find Princess Peach. The Vault Guard accompanies Mario to the vault and explains how coins, Flowers, and Mushrooms work.

The Vault Guard is shown to be cowardly. During Claymorton's invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Vault Guard runs away and hides in the guest room instead of protecting the treasures of the vault.
