Someone haven't played Mario vs DK yet. The lava tide first appears here. The screen will shake to warn the layer that the lava will rise after some seconds and stop until a few seconds when it rises. It would perhaps do that forever (I don't remember tho) Here's a video showing the lava levels in Mario vs Donkey Kong The lava rising level is at the start of the video and even shows it during the cutscene before the level start.
