When used in the air, the move also gives the character some vertical and horizontal distance. In ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'' and ''Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U'', the move can be charged by holding down the special attack button when used on the ground to deal more damage. In addition, both Young Link's and Toon Link's versions of the move can draw in opponents to deal multiple hits; Young Link's move, however, has less range.

Link's first variant is the Shocking Spin, which gives the attack more power and deals electric damage, but removes any horizontal distance and leaves Link vulnerable afterward. Link's second variant is '''Whirling Leap''', which increases the vertical and horizontal distance, but the move can no longer be used as an attack. Toon Link's first variant is '''Sliding Spin Attack''', which gives the move a longer charging time but more attack power, as well as allowing Toon Link to move across the ground, and giving the move more horizontal distance in the air.
