Star Chips are items that appear in Super Mario Galaxy. They always appear in sets of five, representing the points of a star. When Mario collect all five of these pieces, a Launch Star will appear. There are also blue Star Chips; when all five are collected, they create a Pull Star. Sometimes a set of gold star chips make a set of pull stars and a launch star.
