Koopa Klaus

Koopa Klaus is the twenty-ninth episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It's corresponding live-action segment is "Little Marios".

Plot Synopsis

Toad attempts to lead the Mario Bros. and Princess Peach to Hawaiiland, but ends up taking them to the North Pole, instead. As long as they are there, the group decides to visit Santa Claus. It is Christmas Eve, and Peach remembers to present Toad with a gift: a snowboard. Toad eagerly accepts it without bothering to thank her for it.

Just then, Bowser flies over them on a sleigh pulled by Albatosses, on his way to Santa's workshop. He plans to freeze Santa's workshop with Ice Bombs and kidnap him. Upon seeing the Mario Bros., he tosses Bob-ombs at them before flying on. No serious damage is done; however, Toad appears much more concerned about the safety of his snowboard than to whether or not his friends were injured.

Figuring out what the Koopa King is up to, Mario and his pals chase Bowser to Santa's workshop, just in time to see him taking off with a bound Santa Claus. Mario and Luigi manage to ground Bowser and his sleigh by catapulting an ice boulder at him. After an extensive chase sequence, Bowser holds Santa over the edge of a cliff, threatening to drop him into the freezing water below. However, he speaks very loudly and causes an avalanche. Bowser is forced to jump into the water himself (and ends up climbing onto an ice floe inhabitated by an angry polar bear), and Mario rescues Santa by using his plumber's snake to lasso him to safety.

Unfortunately, Santa's workshop is still frozen. Toad couldn't care less, as he still has his snowboard, but, after learning that no one else in the world will receive presents, he offers his snowboard to Santa, telling him to give it to someone else so that at least one person will get a present. The warmth of the Christmas cheer Toad spreads melts Santa's icy workshop. Christmas is saved, and Santa allows Mario and his friends to ride in his sleigh as he delivers presents.

Trivia

• Mario does not wear his regular plumber's outfit in this episode; in stead, he wears Hawaiian-style clothing, explained by the fact that he intended to go to Hawaii and not the North Pole.

• This is the only episode that does not immediately begin with "Plumber's Log".

• This episode contains several plot holes:
  • The good guys manage to reach Santa's workshop at the same rate Bowser does, despite that fact that Mario and co. were walking and Bowser was flying.
  • At the rate that the Mario Bros. readied the ice-boulder catapult, Bowser would have escaped.
  • As Bowser gets away, he whines about how he did not get to ruin Christmas. But, at this point, Santa's workshop was still frozen.

• The good guys' entrance in this episode (coming out from underground) appears to be a nod to cartoon star Bugs Bunny.

• Bowser's plot here (to kidnap and impersonate Santa Claus) would be reused in two later DiC-produced Christmas specials, Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas and Sonic Christmas Blast.
