These are only encountered in Paper Mario and look exactly like regular Piranha Plants. Putrid Piranhas are close relatives to Piranha Plants, and are quite like a tropical version.  However, the biggest differences are that Putrid Piranhas have heavy heads, which forces the Piranha Plant to droop its head, tongue lolling out.  Another difference is that Putrid Piranhas have special glands that turn their breath into a deadly toxin.  Any animal that breathes in the breath becomes lethally poisoned. The final major difference is that, although Putrid Piranhas are most common in the Jade Jungle of Lavalava Island, they are able to live in extremely hot temperatures, such as inside a volcano.
There are two main Putrid Pirahnas in the Marioverse, one in Paper Mario and the other in Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. Putrid Pirahnas are close relatives of Pirahna Plants being red with white spots in the first Paper Mario. The first can either live in Jade Jungle or Mt. Lava Lava. They can live in very hot temperatures and conditions inside the volcano. These conditions cause them to droop with their tongue sticking out. During battle Putrid Pirahnas can use a poison breath attack. This attack will poison Mario for nine turns while doing two points of damage.

A Putrid Piranha in Paper Mario.

There are two species of Putrid Piranha: the Lavalava Island variety and the Keelhaul Key variety. This does not include the Land of the Cragnons variety.

Lavalava Island Putrid Piranha

Lavalava Island Stats

 • HP: 12
 • Attack: 3
 • Defense: 0
 • Location: Jade Jungle
 • Tattle: This is a Putrid Piranha. Putrid Piranhas sometimes bite, but the truly scary thing is their nasty, poisonous breath. The power of their bad breath is 2, but your HP will begin to fall if you get poisoned. You should try to recover as quickly as possible if you get poisoned.

Keelhaul Key Putrid Piranha

The Putrid Piranhas that live on Keelhaul Key are a sub-species of Piranha Plant, rather than a close species. Instead of being red with white spots, they are yellow with red spots. In addition, their teeth are purple. Like their Lavalava relatives, the Putrid Piranha has glands that turn their breath into a lethal poison. Unlike their Lavalava relatives, they do not droop and are not able to live in burning temperatures.

Land of the Cragnons Putrid Piranha

Template:Catch Card These are the Putrid Piranhas that live in the Land of the Cragnons in Super Paper Mario. They look the same as the Thousand-Year Door Putrid Piranhas, however, they do not live on islands. This Putrid Piranha only comes from a pipe and will only use its poisonous breath instead of the chomp.
