Final Fantasy is the flagship series of Square Enix, a highly successful modular RPG series. Many of Square Enix's contributions to the Mario franchise contain references to, and characters from, Final Fantasy. Squaresoft's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is heavily influenced by Final Fantasy tonally and mechanically, which can be particularly seen with secret boss Culex, a parody of Final Fantasy bosses of the time. Much later, various generic Final Fantasy characters and enemies appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Sports Mix, while Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII fame was the first "named" FF character to appear alongside Mario characters, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
