Final Fantasy is a very successful, modular RPG series created by Square Enix. Many of Square Enix's contributions to the Mario franchise contain references to, and characters from, Final Fantasy; early influences can be found in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its secret boss Culex. Various generic Final Fantasy characters and enemies appeared in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Sports Mix, while Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII fame was the first "named" FF character to appear alongside Mario characters, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
