In Paper Mario, there is a dojo where Mario can train. After defeating Lee and getting the Second-Degree Card, Mario can fight The Master at the Toad Town Dojo.
After defeating The Master he will get the Third-Degree Card. This item proves his bravery and allows Mario to fight The Master...again.
