Vim, also known as mushroom power, is the life force of Toads in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. When extracted from Toads, vim resembles a green liquid, with slight yellow spots (as seen in the roots in the ground of the Toadwood Forest); in the Vim Factory, translucent images of horrified Toad spirits are seen flowing through it. The name of vim is an informal English word referring to energy or enthusiasm of an individual.

The Shroobs conquer the Mushroom Kingdom of the past and abduct many Toads so that their vim can be extracted and converted into fuel for their saucers. Captured Toads are taken to the Toadwood Forest and are attached to special bio-engineered trees that slowly suck the vim out of them (Toads who are fully drained lose their coloration and cannot be interacted with). The vim then travels through the roots of the trees to the Vim Factory located in the middle of the forest. A giant tree sits in the middle of the factory, absorbing the vim and sending the solution through pipes that lead to the lair of Swiggler, a bio-mechanical robot Wiggler that has the ability to convert vim into fuel for flying saucers with special chemicals contained within its body. The saucers attach to Swiggler, who then transfers the fuel into the ships.
Vim is the life force of the Toad species. When extracted from Toads, Vim resembles a green liquid with transparent images of sad Toad spirits; the Toad itself withers away and dies without its vim.

When Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi first visit the Toadwood Forest, Toadiko is being drained of her vim and her voice is weak. She tells them the story of what she, Princess Peach, and Toadbert experienced when they landed in the past with Professor E. Gadd's time machine. She manages to tell them all she knew before saucers begin shooting purple beams at the brothers, one hitting Toadiko and turning her into a purple mushroom, accidentally freeing her.
It is unknown if vim is unique to Toads, or if other fungal species such as Goombas or Amanitas possess vim as well. Considering the fact that "vim" merely refers to a Toad's life force, it is even possible that non-fungal species of the Mushroom World contain vim in addition to their life-giving fluids, such as blood. Vim has only ever been referred to in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, in Partners in Time, a species of alien fungi known as the Shroobs harvested the vim from the Toads to convert into fuel. They did not target any other species, so this could indicate only the Toads possess vim, or at least the only type of vim that is usable by the Shroobs, which may or may not have vim flowing in their own bodies. In Bowser's Inside Story, when Bowser got a back-ache, he asked Starlow or "Chippy" to do something about it. When Mario and Luigi meet up with Toadsworth in the Lumbar Nook, Toadsworth explains that to heal Bowser's back, they have to drill into it. He then wishes them to have the upmost vim and vigor, which suggests that humans could possibly have vim too.

Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi destroy Swiggler, stopping it from powering up the saucers.
History
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the extraterrestrial Shroobs conquered the Mushroom Kingdom of the past, and abducted many Toads so that their vim could be extracted and converted into fuel for their flying saucers.

In the battle with the Elder Princess Shroob, a saucer occasionally brings her a drink of vim, restoring either 120 or 80 of her HP depending on the version of the game.
Captured Toads were taken to the Toadwood Forest and attached to special bio-engineered trees. These trees could actually suck the vim out of Toads, slowly killing the mushroom people. A Toad drained of vim would die and be discarded so that another Toad's vim could be drained. The vim would then travel through the roots of the trees to the Vim Factory located in the middle of the forest. A giant tree sat in the middle of the factory, absorbing the vim and sending the solution through pipes that led to the lair of Swiggler, a bio-mechanical Wiggler that had the ability to convert vim into fuel for Shroob Saucers with special chemicals contained within its body. Flying saucers would attach to Swiggler, which would then transfer the fuel into the ships.

Names in other languages
Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi put an end to the operation by destroying the Shroobs, the giant vim-sucking tree, and the Swiggler inside the Vim Factory. It was eventually discovered that baby tears reverted the damage done by the Shroobs, and since at least one of the vim-sucked Toads, Toadiko, was later seen alive and healthy, it is assumed that the tears restored the life force to all the victimized Toads.
