| ==Re: Speculation==
| |
| You came back just to ask little ol' me a question? I'm honored! Anyway, the Wikia admin got it right: making random stabs in the dark is not allowed, but speculation backed by enough valid facts is acceptable. There is no fixed line between what is and isn't allowed, though - it's more of a case-by-case thing, though wild speculation's pretty easy to spot.
| |
| | |
| Your Mr. L Trivia is a very good example for this. Often times, speculation like that would be considered too far a stretch, however, Super Paper Mario is renowned for making references to other games, and considering how Luigi's Thunderhand in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is pretty unique, it is reasonable to draw that connection. Also, Mr. L doesn't use lighting attacks, so that begs the question of where the name comes from. A counter-example of unacceptable speculation (which I just thought of right now), is: "Since Luigi is associated with the name Green Fire (a Kart), "Green Thunder" may have been chosen for Mr. L's nickname as a similar, yet different title." That's even more of a stretch, and while it could also draw on the M&L:SS info by pointing out how the Thunder and Firebrands were "opposites" in that game, it just seems like the writer's trying too hard.
| |
| | |
| Acceptable speculation should be the kind of thing that makes you slap your forehead and go "Why didn't I think of that? That's so obvious!" or maybe "Wow, that's crazy! I never would have thought of that!" but never something that will leave the reader shaking their head going "Well maybe that's true, but..." And then there's that age-old adage: When in doubt, throw it out.

| :I miss these kinda head-scratchers. Well, it's basically the same as if there was only one possible explanation: each postulate must be scrutinized, and if there's enough foundation for the speculation, it can be kept, but if it's more of a stretch, leave it out.
| |
| | |
| :In the Snake & Sonic example, I'd say remove all the speculation, as Nintendo hasn't really given us anything to build on. I've seen the "because hedgehogs eat snakes" thing around here, but that should be removed as hedgehogs aren't renowned for eating snakes - if Sonic was a mongoose, that speculation would hold more water, but as it is, it seems more like grasping at air. The Snake's dislike of fantasy thing is bad because everything around him is fantastic, not just Sonic. Snake hasn't allied himself with Mario (if anything, he prefers Luigi - see), so he shouldn't hate Sonic for being Mario's rival. The voice-actor speculation seems too removed from the games to be the real reason. The only one I'd consider leaving is the third party stuff, as it's the only one that seems to have any sort of solid grounding in real life, but again, it's dealing with RL, which seems too political to inject into the actual game. It seems really out of the blue, as far as I'm concerned, and I'd just as soon leave it as "While there has been a lot of speculation on the matter, no adequate explanation for Snake's animosity towards Sonic has arisen, and no reasons for the cryptic codec conversation have been provided by any official source." If I knew more about the Metal Gear and Sonic series, I might be able to comment further and offer some sort of alternate explanation (maybe it has to do with things Sonic has done in the past that Snake would disagree with; maybe they just have incompatible personalities; maybe Snake just arbitrarily dislikes some people...), but for now, that's all I've got on the subject.

| :The Negative Zone stuff, on the other hand, I do know about. Unlike the Snake Codec speculation, there's a lot of basis for the Negative Zone, and my guess is that Nintendo had most, if not all of it in mind when designing the move. The "Living in Mario's shadow" thing comes straight from Luigi's Final Smash trophy, and isn't speculation at all: "This technique is a reflection of the dark side he embraced in his brother's shadow." However, this doesn't mean the other points are any less truthful, since there doesn't have to be just one answer. The palette swap fact is perfectly valid, and while the colours of the negative zone are more opposite than the difference between the original Mario and Luigi sprites, green is the opposite of red. The Minus World thing is more of a stretch, as it is referring to the name of the attack more than what it's actually like, and seeing as the effects of the Negative Zone do not resemble Minus World in the slightest, I wouldn't include that point. (The Smash Wiki's point about how the zone looks like a photo negative is more plausible a name origin, though comparing it to the original Japanese name to see if it refers to "negative" as in film or "negative" as in opposites would be the best way to investigate that speculation, as I doubt the two negatives are homographs in Japanese too.) The destroyed Sammer's Kingdom is even more of a stretch in that it does not reflect the name, effects or appearance of the Negative Zone, but is more of a metaphor for the things Luigi did as Mr. L, and while he can be seen as another representation of Luigi's "dark side", the whole thing is reading too much into the matter. I'd forget the Sammer's Kingdom stuff, and merely mention Mr. L in the "Mario's Shadow" exposition, as he was the first real occurrence of Luigi's "dark side"; in turn, the Negative Zone should be mentioned on the Mr. L page, as it is a direct continuation of the themes presented in Super Paper Mario.
| |
| | |
| :In conclusion, when it comes to multiple possibilities, simply evaluate each point as you would individual speculations. Keeping the whole picture in mind is also good, as you can then compare the postulates to see what is strong and what is weak - in order to cull the whole thing into a manageable amount of speculation, and not a huge mess. There is no right and wrong solution when all we can do is speculate, and there is no single answer either. The most we can do is give the readers the most likely possibilities and let them decide for themselves.

| | |
| :Also, if you go and remove the Snake and/or Negative Zone speculation on the SMASHwiki based on my recommendations, I'd appreciate it if you give me some sort of (small) credit for it. Talk to you later! - 23:22, 9 July 2009 (EDT)
