== SRoMG ==
Welcome to my talk page! I'll reply to messages as soon as I can, and feel free to remind me if I've forgotten anything.
{{br}}

== File names ==
True, Slamacow and DanTDM could probably be removed. The YouTube Poops are pretty much widespread memes that they were ''officially acknowledged'' by the show writers, ergo making it noteworthy. SRoMG is fan-created and has nothing officially substantial about it, so it doesn't belong on the page. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 20:30, 9 September 2018 (EDT)
:Ah, okay. I'll remove Slamacow and DanTDM, along with SRoMG. I think the page should have guidelines, and we should at least set some obscurity limits.
::Page is already asking for a rewrite, so yeah, it definitely needs some work... {{User:Alex95/sig}} 20:34, 9 September 2018 (EDT)
:::For starters, we should move "Super Mario Remaker" to the controversy page.
::::Not sure on that one. It's officially acknowledged, but it's not so much a controversy. It could probably also go on the ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'' page, but this sounds like a discussion to bring up on [[Talk:List of Mario references on the Internet]] if you really want to work on this. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 20:50, 9 September 2018 (EDT)
::::Nah, I don't think I know enough about the majority of material on the page to work on it. The page is a mess, anyways, and it'd take a very long time to clean up.

I'm mainly asking out of curiosity, but how do you get the internal file names for characters in the Paper Mario series? {{User:Keyblade Master/sig}}
== File redirects ==

== So, Um ==
In case we don't get around to them, please remember to mark the redirect left behind after a file is moved with {{tem|delete}}, to let the admins know it needs to be deleted. Thank you. {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 00:02, 26 September 2018 (EDT)
:I understand. I wish there was just some way to turn off automatic file redirect creations. [[User:Scrooge200|Scrooge200]] ([[User talk:Scrooge200|talk]]) 18:22, 26 September 2018 (EDT)

Would you happen to know if any new characters, settings, or features were added to any of the three ''[[Super Mario 3D All-Stars]]'' collections? I have played through half of each and they just feel like ports. {{User:The Mansion/sig}} 21:18, September 26, 2020 (EDT)
::Unfortunately, only admins are able to do that. However, if you're doing them in bulk, I can understand going through and marking each one for deletion would be more tedious. In this case, if there's no admins around to delete them, you can just shoot one a message saying to check the [https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=move&user=&page=&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=&hide_patrol_log=1&hide_tag_log=1 move log]. {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 20:49, 26 September 2018 (EDT)
:Good point. For now, I'll be working on the suggestions from you and [[User:Archivist Toadette|Archivist Toadette]], such as [[Host Snifit]], [[Tangerino Grill host|Tangerino Grill waiter]], [[Green Energy Plant researcher]], [[Bridge Kinopio|Bridge expert]], [[Port Prisma barista]], [[Bloo Bay Beach barista]], etc. Sound good? {{User:The Mansion/sig}} 21:27, September 26, 2020 (EDT)
:::You're right, I probably could do that. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks.

Maybe it could be a section on the quotes page with seperate sections like:
Hi, would you mind reuploading [[:File:SMG2 Battle Belt Undergrunt Planet.png|File:Undergrunt.png]] so that it displays at least one Undergrunt? I reverted your previous reupload for that reason. Thanks! {{User:Toadette the Achiever/sig}} 18:13, 1 October 2018 (EDT)

:Well, I guess we can do it if someone starts a project like that. I have <s>a few</s> <s>one</s> two from memory: "Guard, you fool!" That one appears in basically every battle during the enemy's turn. The other one is "Who likes mushrooms? ME!" (Said whenever the player uses a mushroom) {{User:DarkNight/sig}} 12:45, October 14, 2020 (EDT)
::Heh, I remember that, too. Some of them are specific toward bosses while others are for a generic enemy or when Mario uses a certain item or weapon. {{User:The Mansion/sig}} 12:48, October 14, 2020 (EDT)
:::I think "{{fake link|List of audience quotes in Paper Mario: The Origami King}}" is fine. Then you can link it from the quotes page. I don't know how you would fit it into the template without it looking weird though.  {{User:DarkNight/sig}} 12:57, October 14, 2020 (EDT)

The images you're uploading of the ''WarioWare'' microgames seem to be larger than the system is able to put out. How are you capturing them? There doesn't seem to be a need to replace these images. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 19:35, 8 October 2018 (EDT)
:Ah, yeah, they did need to be improved aside from maybe [[:File:Tenderfoot.png]]. But is there a way you can match the proper resolution of 854 × 480 or maybe 640 × 480? {{User:Alex95/sig}} 19:41, 8 October 2018 (EDT)

:::Looks good! {{User:Alex95/sig}} 19:58, 8 October 2018 (EDT)

As I've been focusing on ''[[Super Mario Sunshine]]'' for some time now, I thought I'd finish up the miscellaneous section while waiting on the verdict for the more minor locations. I've referred to the ''[[Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia]]'' for ones I may have missed, such as [[Skelefloor]] and [[Turbo doors]], while making sure to mark them as conjectural. The encyclopedia also lists some other items I'm interested in, although some seem more necessary than others. Mind if I go through some of them with you and get your perspective on the matter? {{User:The Mansion/sig}} 17:06, October 25, 2020 (EDT)
== Donkey Kong Land 2 ==

These are the ones in the encyclopedia I would even consider. Added my own suggestions and to what extent I feel they would justify.
Not sure how much you should prioritize that, as when I'm finished with my school work, I'll continue ripping the SGB DKL sprites, and then move on to DKL2. I mean, go ahead if you want to, but they'll probably be replaced shortly. [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 22:39, 17 October 2018 (EDT)

===Characters===
== Mainbrace Mayhem ==
*[[Bickering Piantas]] - Two squabbling [[Pianta]]s often found around [[Delfino Plaza]] - actually not in the encyclopedia but suggested by [[User:Keyblade Master|Keyblade Master]]. I did find them at one point toward the end of the game just before the flood, after which they seem to disappear. I'm certain they can be found in other places around the plaza before this and will happily look into it.
*[[Beach restaurant Piantas]] - Yes, these are actually defined as characters, but there's absolutely nothing to differentiate them from the others, and since this does come from the encyclopedia, the very limited information that's there might actually be entirely false - such as the claim that they are married, running a shop with their children - unidentified. I suggest we skip this one.
*[[Isle Delfino Police Chief]] - As it would, the chief of [[Isle Delfino Police]]. This information is already on the article along with the rookie (see below) - he plays a big part at the beginning of the game and just sort of hangs around the police station after that. Throughout most of the game he mistakenly believes [[Mario]] is the culprit and seems to shake this off toward the end.
*[[Isle Delfino Police Rookie]] - The Isle Delfino Police rookie, always found next to the chief. I believe he actually has no dialogue unless spoken to, and is also under the idea Mario is the culprit. He's described as a rookie and a worrier here. Maybe, but most of this information can already be found on the aforementioned article.
*[[Ukulele Pianta]] - A Pianta in [[Ricco Harbor]] playing a happy, simple tune. There is another one of him throughout [[Pianta Village]] claiming to be his twin brother. Perhaps, although I would advise against articles for recurring characters who don't contribute or add much to the game overall, especially without anything to distinguish them.
*[[Dune Buddy]] - Currently a redirect, so this one is uncertain. He is found in [[Gelato Beach]] providing information on the [[Dune Bud]]s, and if I recall, he also informs Mario of the hatching of the [[Sand Bird]] egg later on.
*[[Shell flautist]] - He plays in [[Pinna Park]] in front of the [[Buckies]] as well as "other places around Isle Delfino" - though I'll have to do some research with this one.
*[[Pinna Park worker]] - A blue [[Noki]] at the entrance of the park, usually telling Mario about whatever new or updated attraction they have there. Unlikely.
*[[Mommy Noki]] - So, this one is a bit interesting. The encyclopedia claims she may be the wife of the [[Noki grandson]], who is important enough to have his own article. She is found at the start of both [[Noki Bay]] and Pinna Park in a very specific episode, though she'll still be easy to track down. I'll then see if anything she says is actually important information.
*[[Boathouse owner]] - Part of the [[Raccoon]] page - he owns the boathouse and gives Mario 24 [[Shine Sprite]]s for 240 [[Blue Coin]]s.
*[[Mudboat shack owner]] - Another raccoon who "owns" the mudboat rental shack in Noki Bay. Mudboats normally cost 90,000 (?) coins to rent, but he gives Mario a lease for free.

The only other ones excluding these are the items and obstacles, although there actually aren't that many to note. I think I'll leave it at this for now and see what you think. Thank you! {{User:The Mansion/sig}} 19:40, October 25, 2020 (EDT)
I really like what you did on the [[Mainbrace Mayhem (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Mainbrace Mayhem]] page and I hope you will improve other pages this way as well, since [[Arctic Abyss (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Arctic Abyss]] and a couple others have already made the jump to change from what I see. However, I would suggest that you abandon adding info on where to find minor items such as Banana Coins and DK Barrels. It would be an incredible amount of work and would low-key set a new standard for other DKC level articles, and I find that the info isn't really in the interest of readers. Simply adding the number of each item in a level would do :) Otherwise, everything is alright -- {{User:Super Radio/Sig}} 20:36, 5 November 2018 (EST)
:Oh, it seems that {{user|Results May Vary}} is the one who started adding exact locations of minor items, starting with [[Pirate Panic (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Pirate Panic]]. -- {{User:Super Radio/Sig}} 20:38, 5 November 2018 (EST)
::I am going to ask Results May Vary what they think should be done, as they are the one who began adding item locations on level pages, and you may decide what to do based on their answer. -- {{User:Super Radio/Sig}} 20:29, 7 November 2018 (EST)

Hey, mind if I request some screenshots for Monty Mole species? Could you get a screenshot of the Rocky Wrench card in Color Splash in-action? Could you get a screenshot for Origami Rocky Wrenches in-battle in Origami King? Could you get a screenshot for the Monty Mole soccer shop and the Fun, Funky and Functional characters talking in the background of the ending cutscene in Origami King? Finally, if possible, could you get the full body Rocky Wrench sprites or a screenshot in Sticker Star (the spritesheet (https://www.spriters-resource.com/3ds/papermariostickerstar/sheet/65001/) does have feet sprites which means that at one point Rocky Wrenches could be fully seen. This is much different to the following two Paper Mario games, which only have upper half sprites). Yes, keep the black background, it's part of the tile. Its dimensions should be 16x32. Use the tile sheet to figure it out, it at least has the top half on there. [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 22:26, March 24, 2019 (EDT)

Also, the Big Montgomery, Monty Mole, and Monty Mole Patch models from Yoshi”s Wooly World (you can rip them from the 3ds version)? Mind providing most or all the Spanish Monty Mole and Rocky Wrench dialogue both non-translated and translated from that game (and also the origami Rocky Wrench description)? == Dolphin Emulator Tips and Tricks ==
I know I am late to this party but I can't help but notice your [[Special:ListFiles/{{BASEPAGENAME}}|GameCube or Wii screenshots]] aren't as good as they can be. Compare your screenshot with mine in [[:File:Beachcombing for Purple Coins.png]]. Essentially what Dolphin does is stretches the internal resolution to fit the given resolution of the window, even in fullscreen mode. It's faulty programming that has yet to see a proper fix (the developers partially fixed the problem but it is not fully fixed). This is a common problem that doesn't have an easy solution, but the solutions that do exist are better than default settings in Dolphin. ''1x internal resolution'' is the default setting, and for ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'', I found the internal resolution to be [[:File:SMG FFG Hot and Cold Planet Outer Surface.png|640x456]]. So your image must have been in windowed mode maximized, and it stretched the 640x456 image to fit 1860x1016. That's why it looks so blocky. The easiest fix is to adjust the graphics settings and set the ''internal resolution'' to <kbd>auto</kbd>. You can also fiddle around with the window size to get the right resolution keeping the default settings, but that's more trouble than it is worth for mass replacement projects. Details [[User:Wildgoosespeeder/sandbox#GCN/Wii|here]]. Hope this helps. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 14:10, April 17, 2019 (EDT)
:{{quote|When taking screenshots, note that some emulators can alter the display beyond what the actual hardware supports. However, video filters (such as 2xSal) and forced aspect ratio changes are not acceptable in any form.|MarioWiki:Image use policy}}
:That's what the policy states. It is possible and preferred to get 1x native quality screenshots, but the method is very convoluted and doesn't play nice with GCN and Wii games capable of widescreen. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 18:37, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
::I mentioned it in my guide. I don't have all the available Mario/DK/Yoshi games for GCN/Wii. The listed games are what I own. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 18:42, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
:::It's best to go 4:3 for the Wii to achieve native screenshots (widescreen mode is just squished into 4:3 and then it is the TV's job to fix the incoming image to be 16:9) and make sure that <kbd>aspect ratio</kbd> is set to stretch. The resulting image should look like: [[:File:SMG Freezeflame Hot and Cold Outer Surface.png]] This image is in <kbd>1x native</kbd>. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 22:27, April 18, 2019 (EDT)
::::Technically, yes. Just don't give this 16:9 or 4:3 native resolution image too much thought. I did, but mostly as a footnote and out of sheer curiosity what was happening on a technical level. My info can easily become outdated if Dolphin's screenshot issues ever become permanently fixed. Then this conversation and guide's points are a [[Wiktionary:moot point|moot point]]. Continue to supply above 1x native 16:9 images for the time being. That's [[Special:ListFiles/Wildgoosespeeder|what I have been doing]] lately.
::::Side note, right-clicking the title in Dolphin and selecting wiki will give a list of known issues with games. NSMBWii has a few graphical issues with above 1x native that are easily correctable. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 10:08, April 19, 2019 (EDT)
I just updated the [[User:Wildgoosespeeder/sandbox#GCN/Wii|GCN/Wii section]], specifically [[User:Wildgoosespeeder/sandbox#Alternative Screen Capture|native resolution screenshots]], but be warned, the writing is scatterbrained and I need to seriously rework the GCN/Wii section as a whole. I hope you can understand my writing currently. [[File:Paper Mario Dizzy.png|31x42px]]--{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 16:00, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
:Widescreen just makes everything more complicated. I wouldn't bother, unless you set the emulated Wii to 4:3 mode and disable 16:9 mode in any compatible GCN games. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 18:50, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
::I haven't figured out the kinks in Wii screenshot taking. The technique I developed was tested on GCN games. In theory, should work on Wii. Also, there is are two 16:9/4:3 settings. The one you want is found in "Config" and the "Wii" tab, not the "Graphics" and "General" tab. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 19:05, May 7, 2019 (EDT)
:::Aspect ratio should be stretched, 1x native, and make sure to uncheck internal resolution frame dumps. I noticed that if I forgot the latter setting, things just automatically happen. That's why the guide tells you to uncheck it. As for NSMBW, the letterboxing happens for me as well. I guess that is just the way the game runs. :/ --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 20:59, May 7, 2019 (EDT)

What is this oxymoron? Not to be rude, but SMW had some of ''the'' worst sprite artistry in the entire franchise, ''including'' the third-party arcade game home ports. SMAS SMW only changed Luigi's sprites, and SMA2 actually improved a lot graphically, like Magikoopa's incorrectly-encoded palette and the inexplicable three fingers on the Koopas. It did not fix the inexcusably bad color mapping on the Blarggs, so there's that.... [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 23:09, May 24, 2019 (EDT)
:Please do not do that. The image was perfectly fine. We already have {{media link|SMWMvsB.png|an image}} that shows the full screen of the fight. This one was intended to focus on th clown car, hence the cropping. Additionally, Luigi's sprite '''''objectively''''' looks better in the SMAS version, so changing it to the original just makes no sense. [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 03:41, May 25, 2019 (EDT)
:Again, focus of of the image is the point with it (as it appears larger in the image due to the cropping), not accuracy to game's screen parameters. Anyways, while the colors are desaturated due to the GBA's lighting situation, I will in this one case alone begrudgingly say that the GBA version has better graphics than the SNES version, solely because some of the bad sprite art is improved. == RE: Editor icons ==

Hi, when you ripped images for this game, did you happen to come across sprites for the Palace Keys (purple/pink with crown shapes) and the Tower Key (blue key with 5-pointed star shape) for the Palace of Shadow? --[[User:Zootalo|Zootalo]] ([[User talk:Zootalo|talk]]) 13:22, June 1, 2024 (EDT)
They're not YouTube screenshots, they're cropped direct captures of the game. Editor icons are legitimate images since many of them depict the enemies differently than in the actual level, and if you look at [[Super Mario Maker 2#Course elements]], they're the only way to represent each element in each style in a compact and even format, and replacing one or all of them with sprites (especially since many of them are differently sized) would make them look out of place and very inconsistent. I'm not saying it's the wrong sprite, I said to just upload it separately. {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 21:46, September 9, 2019 (EDT)

==More TTYD NS Key sprites==
:Sorry, I forgot before the game came out some of them were from 1080 YouTube videos, but I don't see what difference it makes. I didn't take them through the Switch, I used a capture device that takes png screenshots; I'm well aware of our image policy. Like I said, it would still look awkward rescaling the differently sized ones - We did this with placeholder ''Mario Maker 1'' sprites before ''2'''s release (try doing that with long or tall sprites like Wigglers, Snake Blocks or Skewers and you'll see what I mean). {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 22:16, September 9, 2019 (EDT)
There are several Important Item key sprites that haven't been uploaded yet. Here's what's missing so far:

*Storage Keys from Glitzville (gold, blue with upside-down triangular shape), they're no longer identical from the Shop Key, whose image file has been named incorrectly.
::Wait, are you saying these are ripped, in-game sprites of the course icons (including the ''NSMBU'' and ''3D World'' styles?), not the elements themselves? {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 22:50, September 9, 2019 (EDT)
*Steeple Keys from Creepy Steeple (gray, purple with round shape)
*Station Key from Riverside Station (tan with three circles forming a triangle)
*Elevator Key from Riverside Station (orange with a jewel in it)

Please upload the ripped images for these when you have a chance. Thanks again! --[[User:Zootalo|Zootalo]] ([[User talk:Zootalo|talk]]) 19:23, June 9, 2024 (EDT)

That was all Mid188, I just gave them a nudge on how to organise them. Copy-pasting is fine for now, but transcluding is possible, and would be better to keep the information up to date all at once. I know it uses the markup below but unfortunately I'm currently not sure how to do that with tables without having to replace all of the tables' vertical bars <code>|</code> with <code><nowiki>{{!}}</nowiki></code> ([[User:Mario jc/sandbox|my sandbox for reference]] - using vertical bars would make the table disappear).

*''You climb into the heights of the castle. You see many windows and a blue switch. You hit a switch to bridge a gap, then the shelled one hits a second switch to bridge a second gap. Then you reach a third gap...but there is no third switch. Instead, you jump out the open window and proceed. Then the way opens...''
These are both listed on your sandbox page, but the top one is word-for-word the same as in the GCN version. The second sounds like it's rewording it though, so is only the second one in the Switch version, or are they both in the Switch version?
*''You go to the Great Tree where the little ones live. You see a red cell. You find the key to unlock it somewhere nearby. Then the way opens...''
This one is not in the sandbox and seemingly only in GCN. With the Switch remake adding more predictions, it seems odd for them to completely remove one and have no replacement for it. Did you forget to add it to the sandbox list, or was it really removed from the game?<br>

Is there a prediction in the remake for the Shine Sprite you get from Bub in cabin 8 of the Excess Express? I don't see it on your sandbox list. --[[User:Technetium|Technetium]] ([[User talk:Technetium|talk]]) 12:39, August 15, 2024 (EDT)
== Naming policy ==

== Sentence openers ==
According to [[MW:NAMING]]:
<blockquote>
*The identifier "character" is used when differentiating a character from non-character(s) which share the same name (e.g. [[Ninja (character)]]). If a character shares the same name as another character, the title of the game or series they appear in is used (e.g. [[Lily (Paper Mario)|Lily (''Paper Mario'')]]). If a character name is used more than once within the same game, a species or custom identifier is used (e.g. [[Slim (Pixl)]]).
</blockquote>

The entire point behind the sentence openers is that it tells the bare minimum of a subject's role as the first and foremost thing to know about them, especially if they appear in multiple instances of media. Thanks for fixing a mistake in ''The Origami King'', though. [[User:Super Mario RPG|Super Mario RPG]] ([[User talk:Super Mario RPG|talk]]) 17:31, August 22, 2024 (EDT)
In other words, characters do not get specific type identifiers right off the bat, privy to what you believed was the policy. And yes, Porplemontage himself has repeatedly explained why that exception is the way it is, having summed up his argument [[MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive 55#OK Boomer (Move Boomer (Super Paper Mario) to Boomer (Pixl)?)|here]]:

<blockquote>
<blockquote>This further makes more sense as naming policy suggests using a "Thing" identifier (pixl) over a game identifier.</blockquote>
The "thing" in this case is character. If character can't be used, then you move to #2, which is game. Slim is forced to go to #4 since game can't be used, while Boomer can safely stay at #2 and use game. That the two Pixls end up in different places is simply a result of them needing to differentiate from different things ([[Slim (Flopside)]] forces it). I understand it can be considered annoying, but whether or not they match is really neither here nor there - they are each a different case with different needs. As you said, if you do the move then [[Boomer|these three links]] are inconsistent since one wouldn't use game (and there is no reason for it not to use game since they are all from different games). So basically you want to open up the character identifier to get more specific before moving to game ([https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=MarioWiki:Naming&diff=2493125&oldid=2445836 as it used to be]). This gets into its own weird problems of what should be used, and having some [[User_talk:Porplemontage/Archive_14#Identifier_discussion_.28mostly_for_characters.29|awkward identifiers]]. I think going to the game name sooner avoids that awkwardness in the most objective way possible. If you tally up the amount of "problems" with each system, I'll take the current Pixl "mismatch" and a bunch of objective game identifiers versus a ton of human/flower/whatever identifiers. The [[Slim (Pixl)]] case is a direct result of Nintendo using the same character name twice within one game and rightfully ''should'' be the one awkward situation because '''that is a confusing thing to do'''. Opening up custom character identifiers before moving to game creates awkward cases which are completely the wiki's doing, and we should try keep our hands clean and minimize any impact. No matter what system we land on there will be weird cases to deal with. I think the current system minimizes the damage and is the "least bad" option, and I don't want to keep changing things around. So I'll veto --{{User:Porplemontage/sig}} 20:56, December 30, 2019 (EST)
