Some things have come up on the [[Talk:Thorny flower|thorny flower talk page]] that give credence to the naming proposal, but in summary...
#There are three other known names from English guides, so "thistle" is not a one-off thing, and like thorny flower, all are generic lowercase descriptors (which tend to only be used as article titles if they are consistent, but here, it changes all the time on the writer's whim).
#There are two different Japanese names that refer to the same thing in the ''Super Mario Galaxy'' games and ''Super Mario 3D Land'', and while they seem less generic, even they have an inconsistency there.
#There is one internal name in plain English which is the closest it has to a proper name, and it is at least identical between the ''Super Mario Galaxy'' games and ''Super Mario 3D Land''.
Concerning validity of the original proposal, we've had proposals go [[Talk:Scorchit|around]] naming policy in the past (and sometimes [[Talk:Hatopop|without]]), so I'm asking for permission to reopen the proposal with the current options. Reading the manga again, I just noticed that the chapter in fact references a Game Boy game, so it seems like the story was used to promote the release of Mario Golf for the Game Boy Color in 1999.
