Hey, sorry for bothering you, I saw you have 'Merge Bat (Mario Kart 64) and Bat (Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon) into a generic "Bat (species)" article' in your "current goals", and I just wanted to say that I don't think that's a good idea. The LM2 and LM3 pests do look pretty generic, and they're referred to accordingly by English sources, but, you see those [citation needed] names in the NioL sections? Turns out the ones for the crow (which I intend to split eventually) and spider are used in game, so I believe the others are probably correct as well, possibly from some Japanese guide. I guess what I'm saying is, there's reason to believe they're supposed to be unique, albeit generic looking, recurring enemies. been awhile since I've played the game, and since I've put that there, but that is exactly how it happened. done it once or twice, when the state of the plaza with the plants show up I was trying to do all of Bianco Hills, and when I got my next shine and returned to the plaza, the next plaza state was up with the boathouse resurfaced with the portal active, and the same thing happened to the lighthouse when it's event came around. If I recall this was on the original Gamecube version as well. Not sure if it has to be an uncollected shine, or one already obtained will suffice. But that is how it happened, I know for a fact I did not fight those Pirhana plants. Howdy! The only course table on the ''Mario Kart Wii'' article that comfortably scales to my phone are the battle stages. The Retro courses do not fit perfectly, and they slide a bit when I try to scroll through them. They also look awkward on desktop. :They're the background layer, so that is indeed intentional (GB doesn't have transparent background), and they are stored as different graphics in the data (unlike how left-right sprites usually are), as well as different from the transparent sprite layer ones. Something I noticed recently I thought you would be interested. In the original TTYD, this item is called "Goldbob Guide" and the description says it's a manual for the cannon. However, it's name in other languages including Japanese is "Usage Permit", which even carries over to the English localisation of the remake calling it a "written permission" instead of a manual in the description. :I've been thinking about that in regards to subjects like [[Autobomb]], since I noticed its NES sprite resembles Bowser's flame (more than its SNES one, which iirc just uses the Birdo/Tryclyde/Fryguy fire). I've been considering, perhaps, we should make a separate article for stationary "flame" obstacles (like the falling ones in SMW and NSMBU, the torches in SM64, and other assorted things) and having "fire (projectile)" encompass those other ones (including Bowser's) - especially the Piranha Statue, since it's the named enemy in that case, simply named "fire" it may be. I also think that much of what is currently on [[Fireball (obstacle)]] should be merged between the standard fireball (the swirling/spherical kind that generally bounces around, like Fire Mario shoots), the forward projectile, and the stationary/falling obstacle. But that's just spitballing at this point, since there's so many other types of fireball obstacles that don't fit cleanly, like Reznor's. The main purpose of the "absent" ones is so you can tell "oh, that's the first mission and that's the third mission, but not the second mission" easily, and it doesn't have to deal with line breaks. I think a bullet list is preferable for less... multidimensional appearance lists, but this one needs a bit more formatting than that. ::That's fair, I'll give you that yours is easier to work with at a glance. My goal there was to make it clearer to readers what's going on. For someone who is unfamiliar with the game (or maybe it's been so long that they forgot some details) just seeing that an enemy is in missions 1 and 3 isn't as helpful as knowing what those missions actually are, IMO. Better to have that information directly on the page than make people hover/click on the stars to find out as it's less steps for the reader to figure out what's going on. It takes a little more time to process, but also we're a wiki and I don't think having to read a little hurt anyone. So I think our philosophies there on what's important for presentation on an article just differ.
::I went for the columns on the bullet lists since the alternative was using a lot of horizontal space and leaving a lot of whitespace, which I didn't really want to do. That ''could'' be put in a collapsible but I don't like to rely on those, as far as I know they can't actually close on mobile. The spacing on the columns can be adjusted though if that's an issue. Out of respect for you, I will not be linking many diffs and I will try to be brief as possible, but you should be aware. Often times, when you're arguing with people, you're being very overbearing, arguing over multiple editors who revert your edits, advancing positions too aggressively and too persistently in spite of most editors disagreeing with your approach, relying on semantic arguments so strongly that others would interpret as pedantry, and not cooperating besides the most basic action of avoiding edit wars and starting a talk page discussion. This is particularly true when disagreements revolve around fundamental philosophy on what a wiki should be doing with game assets it has (for example you believe a wiki should try to be as close to game assets as possible to remove the strings attached and show the inner workings of a game; other users believe in a presentable, maintenance-easy approach such as galleries having sprites that are viewable or have much less emphasis on a sprite is presented due to believing it's not an important detail), but it's much pronounced when your philosophy is at odds with most editors. As a result, we've had ''several'' users come to us complaining how difficult you are to approach, which tells me something has to be done here.

For instance the end of your own userpage has a disclaimer from you that you will continue pushing your points as people disagree with you and that you will reject people that strongly voice opposition on a suggest without even qualifying the claim; this is a debate philosophy we've seen play out that several users have complained about. Now, you say what you want in that userpage but I think it's ill-advised to set such a strong argumentative impression others will get from you and you need something more thoughtful and welcoming, try to be considerate ''why'' someone would think otherwise. Ergo, assume good faith.

Instead of this persistent behavior that is making people reluctant to voice disagreement with you, ''including when opposing your proposals'', when people revert your edits and explain that you are wrong, you need to listen to people, read carefully what they're saying, address their complaints, communicate understanding of people's positions, and most importantly make concessions about some of your decisions here especially when multiple people are involved. I hope you take this advice to heart: if you're on a losing proposal, sometimes it's best just call it a game and let it go. Let people have the last word, and let the chips fall.

Now, your edits have been overall great quality such as your work on overlooked articles such as [[Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally]] and [[Mario's Tennis]] including your impeccable effort at uploading much needed assets from these games; or the addition of options the wiki can use to manage the sprite display on a gallery; or the plentiful proposals you have successfully persuaded people to vote alongside you; which is why we're reluctant to hand out these measures to you. Please don't take this message to mean anything personal to your worth as an editor. Instead, do focus on the fact you're capable of improvement and we have expectations from you that you will. Hi, Doc. I assume you saw Ray Trace and me delete the White Block sprites you uploaded. Just for posterity, we did this because multiple users checked recent uploads are were immediately overstimulated with flashing lights and this can cause seizures or epilepsy in some people. My eyes currently hurt from combing through those. I understand we have no policy for this on the books at the moment, and you probably did not consider the impacts of that, but going forward, if you or anyone else is uploading an animated sprite of rapidly changing colors, please deviate from what is done in-game by slowing it down to ensure we are not hurting our visitors or causing any sort of epileptic episodes. I hope that is understandable. Please do not upload every single sprite variant of a rapidly color-changing subject for ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' or any other game, and if there are legitimately fully distinct animated sprites of changing colors, they should not be uploaded one after another. I hope that is understandable.

Additionally, while this was surely an Herculean effort and you have uploaded some cool stuff, I wanted to let you know that multiple users have relayed that they feel the amount of sprites on the ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' gallery have become really gratuitous. Many folks do not think we need the variant of every single subject in every single scenario. :The main reason for the variants thing for enemies and such is for the enemy tables in stage articles, actually, moreso than the game gallery - I just want to gather them all there before I disseminate them out so as to not need to make multiple sweeps. Also, for a more thorough list of differences for the remake pages. I guess this cuts down the work I need to do, lol, there are precisely 271 possible invincible Mario/Luigi flashes counting all power-up combinations and the map sprites in addition to the stage palette variations; this will bump that down to a much simpler 24. Regarding the blocks, three of them were used on a notes point on the White Block page, so that will need dealt with. I suppose the simplest thing is to keep the one that was already there (ie, the one with a different naming structure). I had considered drafting a new feature allowing tagged images to be activated from one's view (non-visible by default) to avoid any complications with flashing images, but I'm not sure if that can be implemented. I actually do take seizure risk very seriously, which is why I shrunk down those images in particular on the gallery - but I hadn't realized people check the "new files" page for any reason other than collecting their own images, so I apologize for that. My brother has epilepsy and that's led to some scary moments for us both. (On a more amusing note, I was born on the exact day of the Pokémon Shock incident.) ::In all my honesty, I'd still push for slowing down the flashing frames on these color-changing sprite GIFs. Assuming your feature about tagged flashing images comes to life, I can't imagine if that's gonna be really useful, because if it works similarly to collapsible tables, users might click on it and get flashed with sensitive flashing imagery, assuming those are unchanged. Mario Wiki aims for accuracy, but in some situations like these, I think that's where we need to deviate a bit.<br><br>Additionally, my other concern on the excess sprite images in the gallery is potential loading times (even if these images are small), especially for mobile data users. I could not imagine myself wasting data over seeing several variants of colored water from a world map, and it's honestly a little bit of a pain to scroll through. I underlined the part most relevant here. Since our discussion, you have continued to upload a lot of assets pertaining to ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' to its gallery, and other users have continued to raise issues with them. The loading times for the SMB3 gallery is reportedly poor and the sheer amount of assets uploaded—both variations for subjects across different level themes and even the [[:File:SMB3 Rubble flash.gif|types of subjects]]—is gratuitous. I understand you have a completionist mindset, that these are fun projects for you, and that you have uploaded some cool things that we should keep (I love [[:File:SMB3 King W6 changed.gif|this one]], for example). However, Super Mario Wiki is a shared space and a communal project. We had a pretty substantial [[MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive/66#Trim Mario Kart course galleries of excess Tour stuff|proposal concerning ''Mario Kart Tour'' assets]] last year that saw community-wide discussion, and one of the things emphasized is that this site we share is not an asset dump. I also think folks at large would appreciate the good stuff you uploaded (such as [[:File:SMB3 HUD flip map Japanese.gif|this one]]) if you removed the surplus (like [[:File:SMB3 HUD card glitch 1.png|this one]]).

We need to reduce the size of the SMB3 gallery. I think we need to: (1) delete some of these uploads from the site (such as the ones for rubble, [[:File:SMB3 Map Path and space 7.png|map route tiles]], [[:File:SMB3 Whack normal.gif|particle affects]], the individual [[:File:SMB3 HUD coin counter.png|pieces of the interface]], and other things of that nature); (2) distribute some variants and excesses to their respective character and enemy articles/galleries - the galleries for ''Super Mario Galaxy'' and ''Super Mario Odyssey'' don't include all the assets on the site for those games for the same gallery loading reasons - we probably only need one example of a ? Block sprite on the main SMB3 gallery, for example; and (3) if there really is too much here after the completion of the second step, we should even split the SMB3 gallery into multiple galleries, similar to ''[[Gallery:Super Mario Maker|Super Mario Maker]]''. I don't think that will be necessary, but there is at least a precedent.

:What I'm eventually hoping to do is upload ones of the SMAS and SMA4 ones to have a more in-depth comparison page beyond just a blanket "the graphics are changed," like what we do with modern remakes. I agree that there is a large amount of images on there, but there's also larger galleries for things like the ''Maker'' games that rather end up split. I see no reason why we shouldn't have all these alternatives any more than we shouldn't have, for instance, the blue Goombas from the original ''Super Mario Bros.'' in addition to the brown ones. I personally prefer they all be available in one place that is organized (unlike the category page), and particle effects deserve love too IMO, as they are underappreciated (think of it like the Whomp King's speech on rocks, lol). ::::::I'm one of the people raising concerns over the number of uploads to the ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' gallery page. While I understand where you're coming from, and I do agree with parts of it, I still have some issues. Mainly, I believe the wiki should be ''primarily'' concerned with depicting the subjects of Mario games, be them characters, objects, places, etc., and not the inner-workings of these games. For example, take the character of Bowser. He can be brought to life by various means, using textures, models, sprites, etc. While those are all interesting aspects by their own right, ultimately they all serve to make up something that is greater than the sum of its parts. If Bowser is depicted by a sprite with transparency overlaid on a black background, then it is more true to the character to display his "sprites" with outlines included than without. It is unhelpful to go to his gallery and find an incomplete depiction of his character just because of how he is constructed. (note I said ''primarily'', not exclusively. Occasionally showcasing these types of game development tricks can be interesting enough on their own).

Depicting every variation of every minor object in every possible palette worsens loading times (especially with gifs) and can cause unnecessary clutter, making galleries harder to read while bringing in information that is almost entirely unremarkable (e.g.: "this dust effect has a blue frame instead of an orange frame"). :::::::Wherefore be the scale an issue? Once again, many games have more assets uploaded, like the amount of assets Blueberrymuffin's uploaded for ''Mario Party'' games. Anyways, since we've removed the fake outlines from the arcade games and Bowser's SMB1 sprite, it is only logical to do so with others, so I still do not see why that should be an issue. Anyways, it's true SMB3 has a lot of images per subject relative to some other games, but that's mainly because it was a very ambitious project for a device that can only display 8 palettes across two layers at any one time; since later games have more color slots available, they can afford more consistency. This inconsistency is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting parts of the game, and so I wanted to properly illustrate that. IMO, "excessive" would be something like uploading the game's entire font or something like that, lol. I'll summarize some of the grievances that were made on the discord:
# Some background color choices seem frivolous. For subjects that only appear in particular stages it makes sense, but for something like the various power-up forms of Mario, the various colors of background seem simply distracting. When choosing background colors for ''Super Mario Maker'' galleries for instance, I use exclusively the Ground daytime sky color unless the sprite literally cannot appear in Ground daytime to keep things consistent.
# The HUD variants are very difficult to discern, and don't make the reason for their existence clear. The difference between the Japanese and international sprites is a single pixel of transparency leaking through, which is just not clear from having the ''entire'' bars present ''on a black background''. The difference would be much better illustrated by having a smaller comparison of just the "WORLD" graphics, displayed on a non-black background. Similarly, the flip animations are just too fast to tell the apart. Side-by-side sprite sheets would make it apparent what the difference actually is. As they stand, It seems like a bunch of sprites being duplicated for no reason.
# Colored gallery backgrounds were implemented so that sprites with white elements can be placed in front of a background that lets those details show clearly. The use of a black background on the Bob-omb (keyless) animation only serves to obscure the sprite's real shape.
# The use of transparency in world map and minigame sprites is taking the NES graphics a bit too literally. Yes, the background ''is'' black in the world maps, but the game is clearly using that transparency to draw images with four particular colors, not three colors and a separate, potentially changing background. Unlike Bowser's sprites which don't have a defined edge (and I would fully agree with NOT adding in a fake outline there), it's very clear what is and isn't supposed to be a black outline on [[:File:Mushroom Spade Panel SMB3 sprite.png|The roulette sprites]].
## As an extension of the above, putting a blackbg on these world map sprites in the gallery doesn't reflect how they actually appear in-game. The Spade Panel has a 1-pixel black outline around it, which is easily seen in-game when surrounded by other colored tiles, but it fades into the black gallery box. I suggested changing these sprites such that what is currently "transparent" just be colored black directly, and then the gallery can use colored bgs that correspond to the unique "ground" color that the maps use. :I understand (and don't disagree with) most of that, I'm a completionist and needed to scratch the "all variants of the HUD" itch (and to make it clear when something is not the "only" version of something, because having only one version does kinda give off that implication, unfortunately). And I thought the colors would be fun and consistent with what the SMB1 article does, but I probably overdid it a bit lol. The Map tiles work better on tabular images that don't have the gallery padding; see the [[Panel (Super Mario Bros. 3)]] article, they look fine there. I just wanted it abundantly clear that despite the common misconception, the "grass" color on the map is not the actual transparency. Also, the black being the transparency actually does come into play with palette flashes, such as when a whistle or Hand Trap is activated - and ones like {{file link|SMB3 Map Stage 10.png|this}} with hidden details that can't be seen when it's opaque black. I'm sorry for replying so late to this topic, however, I've been meaning to share a perspective that I can hopefully reference further. For the time being, I do not know where else it is currently relevant to air it.<br>The one point of contention I easily agree on here is that the sheer amount of sprites were hampering the gallery's loading performance, something I can experience first-hand looking at its corresponding revision. It goes without saying that the content that exists on this site should be managed acceptably and digestibly so that users can actually, well, use the site. Where I disagree is that these sprites are objectively "uninteresting" or that the wiki should be as conservative as possible with such uploads because of an unspoken rule that governs media franchise wikis. OK, the encyclopedic part of the site, which relies on explanatory material first and foremost, should harmonize the reference material (pictures, music snippets, quotes, etc.) with the user-generated contents to fulfill its purpose as an educational resource. Even galleries, the wiki's current media repositories, ought to be well put together rather than act as a simple dumping ground.<br>I do find it very concerning, however, that there is so much contention to the simple act of ''having'' certain game assets such as those uploaded by Doc, or the aforementioned Mario Kart Tour icons, somewhere on the wiki. In the proposal that concerned the latter, one user unfavorably likened this practice to hosting every single texture used in 3D games. My question is why, systematically and principially, is it ''not supposed'' to do this? Who decides this? The community of signed-up users, who may or may not have a personal interest in such minutiae, do not represent the entire readership. Indeed, there are people who take interest in in-game particle effects and utilitarian assets, and the wiki can serve these enthusiasts. Just looking up the word "[https://www.reddit.com/r/MarioKartTour/search/?q=icons icons]" <small>(reddit.com)</small> in that subreddit brings up dozens of threads of people making literal ''fan art'' of these icons. I assume they used the wiki to draw these images for their posts, since Spriters' Resource has yet to upload them.<br>So, should we agree that the worth of these assets is ultimately subjective and it's not our call to restrict them for that reason, what kind of threat do these sprites uploaded by Doc pose?
*That they bloat the Super Mario Bros. 3 gallery? They can easily be split into dedicated sub-galleries, leaving the prominent ones on the parent gallery for illustrative purposes.
*That they occupy space in the storage? Not only has Porplemontage [[User_talk:Porplemontage/Archive_16#A question about revisions in history|stated]] that [[User_talk:Porplemontage/Archive_16#A_question_regarding_your_server_storage|storage space is not currently a problem]], but I have some serious trouble figuring out how a bunch of pixel art from a some-hundred-kilobyte game will ever bog it down.
*That hosting them is illegal? The wiki has ostentatiously paraded visual assets that qualify as copyrighted for 2 decades now, so that's moot.

:TBH, I think the galleries are just overwhelming when they are that big, though I do personally understand the appeal and desire to have a reference of visual material that is curated and all encompassing. :Because it's not an exact mirror of the animation. I see it as like uploading the close-up "VS screen" Luigi sprites in some sports games (like ''Strikers'', I think) where they're slightly different to keep the "L" consistent, which is also a barely noticeable change. This is also looking forward for the ''All-Stars'' versions of those animations, which are more visibly different due to outline shenanigans (the outlines of his feet very often look off due to sharing tiles with the arms due to 8x16 space issues). As for the colors, those are mostly to put on the stage articles (ie a jumping or flying one to be clear which behavior is used, not every Boom Boom of that color).
