Ultimate NES Remix is a "best of" compilation of the NES Remix series and is the only installment of the series available on a handheld, specifically for the Nintendo 3DS. The game was announced on August 29, 2014, and was released in late 2014 in Europe, Oceania, the United States, and Canada and Summer 2015 in Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Unlike NES Remix Pack for the Wii U, which contains everything found in NES Remix and NES Remix 2, Ultimate NES Remix contains only challenges from 16 games pulled from both games along with two new game modes and a returning mode from NES Remix 2. Due to hardware limitations of the Nintendo 3DS, stamp-collecting has been removed.

Players who ordered the game by December 5 received a download code for a limited edition Famicom-style 3DS theme. Unlike most 3DS games, Ultimate NES Remix supports only 2D display, making this game the first Super Mario game to only be playable in 2D.

Gameplay[edit]

Games[edit]

The challenges are almost the same as its predecessors. There are a few differences such as wording for the instructions. The players are also able to see regional rankings for games stages.

Speed Mario Bros.[edit]

Just like NES Remix 2, Ultimate NES Remix contains a port of Super Mario Bros.. It is named Speed Mario Bros.. It is almost identical to the original, except that it runs at twice the speed and there is no 2 Player mode.

Championship Mode[edit]

Ultimate NES Remix includes the NES Remix 2 mode Championship Mode. The player faces three challenges, and the goal is to get as many points as possible. The first challenge is to collect 50 coins in Super Mario Bros., the second challenge is to collect 25 coins in Super Mario Bros. 3, and any remaining time is used to score as many points as possible in Dr. Mario.

Famicom Remix Mode[edit]

Exclusive to Ultimate NES Remix, this special mode is unlocked by earning three stars in every stage in the game. It includes challenges from the Japanese version of the game, some of which use different sound effects.[2][dead link] Conversely, in the Japanese version, the North American version can be played as a special mode when earning three stars in every stage in the main mode.

Nintendo 3DS eShop description[edit]

American English version

Take on a rapid-fire onslaught of challenges and mash-ups from 16 of Nintendo's finest 8-bit games! Test your skills on a gauntlet of quick, tricky challenges and remix stages that combine parts of different games. The best mix of titles from the NES™ Remix and NES™ Remix 2 games is on Nintendo 3DS. Now you're playing with PORTABLE power! Link™ vs. Donkey Kong™! Kirby™ vs. Boo™! It's mash-up mania in this celebration of all things NES™! Race through to earn stars on increasingly tough tasks, like beating Ridley from Metroid™ or making Princess Peach™ save herself! Compete in Championship Mode's blitz of challenges from the Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.™ 3, and Dr. Mario™ games, then compare scores with others in your region via online leaderboards.

British English version

In Ultimate NES™ Remix on Nintendo 3DS, players take on bite-sized challenges based on classic Nintendo titles such as Super Mario Bros., Metroid and more. Remix stages rework the rules and give these games all-new twists: characters turn up in unfamiliar places, screens are flipped upside down and colours are swapped around!

Reviews
Release Reviewer, Publication Score Comment
Nintendo 3DS Daan Koopman, Nintendo World Report 7.5/10 "Ultimate NES Remix is a nifty collection for the Nintendo 3DS. It isn't the full featured package of your dreams, but the games they have chosen are quite playable and make for a great way to spend your time. For the veteran of the Wii U games, this new collection might be not enough to warrant to a second go, but having these challenges on a portable system is certainly a nice thing. The online features of NES Remix 2 are also mostly here, though I do think that the leaderboards are what more direct than the random Miiverse posts. Those two things might give Ultimate the edge it needs to convince you."
Nintendo 3DS Marcel van Duyn, Nintendo Life 7/10 "While Ultimate NES Remix is technically a sound game, it comes across as a rather modest, slightly lazy port. You're only getting about two thirds of the original content from the original Wii U eShop releases, and what was arguably one of the most fun instances of Miiverse integration is completely absent. If you don't see yourself getting a Wii U in the near future and desperately want to see what the fuss is all about, this is still a good investment, but otherwise it's probably best to just pick up the original titles or wait for the combo pack."
Nintendo 3DS Timothy Torres, PC Magazine 3.5/5 "Though comparable to time wasters on smartphones with its emphasis on quick bursts of play, Ultimate NES Remix is a good way to travel down memory lane and maybe even discover some 8-bit classics you never experienced."
