The player controls Mario, who is controlling the Tornado, which is flying near Tokyo Tower. Sonic stands on the standing area in front of the controlling area of the Tornado. The player can shoot out normal and charge shots to destroy enemies; however, some enemies use Bumpers as shields, meaning the player cannot shoot those enemies. The player can also use loops, which causes the Tornado to spin. A loop causes a shockwave that can stun some enemies; however, there is a cooldown to how much the player can use this due to Sonic losing balance due to the spin. During the stages, there are Rings to collect, but they do not act how they normally do in other Sonic the Hedgehog games due to there being a heart counter with five hit points. When the player reaches the end of the stage, they must fight a boss. There is one stage in Story Mode and three in the Game Room.
