It is actually much more efficient than just using the interwiki links themselves because as the template is inserted into the page, it will show where the template is used. This is ''extremely'' useful if we want to keep track of where our interwiki links go (which I feel we should make it a standard to use interwiki links in templates only, and use those templates on pages). And it's not really obsolete, seeing as the template is still here.
