| | :While the plot elements may be cliche, I do not think any dark themes are forecast by it, nor that Nintendo wished to drive in that direction. And gamers are demanding believable and complex story plots for these big games, now that technology has made it all possible. In the 90s, it was just good & evil because just playing the game was fun, the story didn't matter. In these Paper Mario games, a good story keeps the player interested in an otherwise truly-2D game. However, the storys are just supposed to keep the game together – collect it all into a sensible purpose for the whole experience. You shouldn't take this as such as seriously as you are, and while maybe E10+ might have been appropriate for this game more, certainly not T – no blood violence or sex mentioned. 20:03, 7 January 2008 (EST) |
| | ::Pretty much what Wayoshi said; while the "Mario goes off to save a kingdom and a damsel" plot was good early on, now that technology has improved, people want more than that (complex plots and twists, sub-plots, more threatening villains, etc). Nintendo pretty much has no choice but to give the public what they want (but not make it themselves apparently, they have other developers do it for them, like Intelligent Systems, creator of the Paper Marios and Fire Emblems). -- Sir Grodus 20:18, 7 January 2008 (EST) |
| | :::I understand your point, but I am not against a good story, just the details. When the origanel Paper Mario came out, the "star granting wishes" beginning never bothered me, despite the fact that when the characters make a wish, it looks like they are praying. That is not what I mean. I mean what this one has gone to. Yes, the Mario universe had a beginning, but I would have better enjoyed something to the lines of the stars made their world, and leave it that, not this whole "prophecy" thing. As a religous person, I believe phrophecy should stay in religous texts like the Bible. Still, I think what you said is true. I just miss the villans who had a heart every once and a while. |

| | :It's just a game! In response to your statement about Pokémon, the book in the Canalave Library explains the supposed creation of the Pokémon universe. It has nothing to do with our universe, and it in no way contradicts the Bible. Pixl 08:21, 30 January 2008 (EST) |

I know a modern day court would dispute it, but tptb made the wedding pretty true when they started the void. Is Bowser King of the Mushroom Kingdom from marriage? Ugh, I'm not a fan of BowserxPeach, but should it be commented on either Peach or Bowser's page that they are presently married?Worldminus1

| :::::Notes are far more useless than a visual representation of a character. I don't see how images would bloat the table, the vast majority of tables in this wiki use image for decorative and informative purposes. In fact, notes are the information that bloat the table, since they're far more superfluous than images. To demonstrate how useless they are, the very first note calls this the first boss of the game when it should be readily apparent to the player that the first boss listed is the first boss of the game while most notes are entirely stripped out of meaningful context in the boss battles they're portrayed in (like the "Temporarily Invincible", "No damage is done unless red tentacle is hit." and "Fought when confronting Dorguy the Third.") something this very article as well as the respective character articles cover very well enough already. 00:35, 28 November 2016 (EST)

| :::::::::::::But the table itself was designed without images in mind. Even putting aside the bloat and scroll work created by the images, the just don't look good thrown in there, especially with the yellow, which looked fine without the images. -- 12:20, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :::::::::::::Well, something had to be done. It's inconsistent to have images at the Paper Mario article, but not here. Should the images instead be removed from Paper Mario?
| |
| ::::::::::::: 12:33, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| ::::::::::::::Yes, actually. Most of the enemy content there needs to be removed anyways because of "Once and Only Once.", but w ecould leave the bosses, but it should function more like the boss table on PMTTYD, as should the other games in the Paper Mario series and Mario and Luigi series.-- 12:39, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :::::::::::::::Images not functioning in the table is not the image's fault, it's because that table is sloppily designed in the first place; also, I'd rather we have some scrolling rather than sacrifice important visual information such as appearance of a character; some people can recognize a boss's design, but not their names. Also, can we not use yellow cells? Signify their status as chapter bosses with text formatting such as bold, not garish yellow cells. 16:55, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| ::::::::::::::::I'm not blaming the image, I'm blaming the table. Everything has to be formatted just right, and right now it's not. with the amount of text in each cell being so small, only occupying one line, the addition of those images, in the way they are now, makes each row unnecessarily tall. There isn't enough information in the table to fill up the added space. It looks bad, and it causes the table to take up approx. five times the height it previously did. To sum it up, the table takes up way more space than the information inside it.-- 17:51, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :::::::::::::::::You're still missing the point. Images provided are information, they're visual information, not textual. However, they're not the problem. The sheer inconsistencies with the artwork, sprites, and catch cards used are the main problem. Most other games like the Mario & Luigi series use sprites but this game is a hybrid of both sprites and models. I think it would be a better idea to use Catch Cards instead, as they're consistently sized and all enemies should have them. If not, we have to resort to using screenshots for 3D models and assembled sprite textures. 18:17, 28 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :Whoa! The new table looks cool, but it's way too fancy to be professional! All the links are the same color as the text, which is a bad practice, and the way the Stats are listed just looks wrong.

| |
| :::You're missing the point. It looks unprofessional simply because of how fancy it is. It should look like a basic table, not all flashy. The different color shades, the way the stats are presented and especially the different colored links make the table look really cool, but unprofessional.
| |
| ::: 10:49, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| ::::I felt that the way it was before looked unprofessional. I underlined the links, since underlines are a secondary indicator of a link. For the way it's set up, the stats are readable. Before, the table was so tall you couldn't read the headers after scrolling down. For the colors, I needed a good way to easily separate the different chapters in each row. At least I managed to shrink the table overall, which is a big win in my book. It still had no business taking up that much space.-- 11:43, 29 November 2016 (EST)

| Why not just make the table look like how it does in on the Paper Mario page, but just with the bosses (as the regular enemy list isn't exactly needed here or there)? It's a simple set-up, shows the basic information, and easy to read. 12:18, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :For the exact same reasons that I was against this table after the images were added: The table takes up more space than the information that fills it. I can't believe no one else can see what I'm getting at.-- 12:26, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| ::No reason to get angry, Eldritch. Is it possible to shrink the properties of the table, making it the proper size dependent on the info within it? Sorta like how I have it here on my wiki, the table is condensed based on the info it contains. 12:32, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :::Possibly? Unless it only affects the width of the table, since the problem lies with the height.-- 12:40, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| ::::Might be best to use the catch cards images then, instead of the artworks. Assuming the card images are all about the same height, that should help with the problem somewhat. 17:50, 29 November 2016 (EST)
| |
| :OK, so it's been almost two months and no change. What's the plan? Baby Luigi and Alex95 suggested using Catch Card images, but that hasn't been implemented. The table still looks flashy and unprofessional. What do we do?

| ==Bosses and Mini-Bosses==
| |
| It has come to my attention that there is no distinction made in the categories related to this game between the chapter bosses and the other bosses. I'd say the chapter bosses and bonus bosses should be considered "bosses," while the others, found in the middle of chapters, to be considered "mini-bosses," as they are typically weak bosses with little bearing on the plot (with the obvious exceptions of one like O'Chunks, but I'd say he still qualifies as a mini-boss.) In the solely-platforming-based games, only the bosses at the ends of each world are considered bosses, while the ones in the middle (like Boom-Boom, Reznor, Burt the Bashful, Boss Sumo Bro., etc.) are considered mini-bosses, and I think that rule should extend to here as well. Doc von Schmeltwick 19:43, 6 July 2017 (CT)
| |
|
| |
| :I agree, though I disagree with the statement that mini-bosses have little bearing to the plot (Bowser joins the party after each fight, all the mini-boss battles in Castle Bleck result in the loss of a character, etc.). You'll notice that the quality of articles related to SPM are surprisingly poor, which is why there isn't a separate category for mini-bosses.
| |
| : 20:52, 6 July 2017 (EDT)
| |
|
| |
| ::I did mention exceptions to the plot rule, but for many of them, there is not much plot, such as Mega Koopa, Big Blooper, Underchomp, the optional second fight with Francis, and things like that. Doc von Schmeltwick 20:26, 6 July 2017 (CT)
| |
| Most of the bosses are fought at the end of chapters, with I think O'Chunks being the exception. Even so, O'Chucks is fought as the boss of Chapter 8-1. I don't think there's a clear defining factor between boss and mini-boss in this game. Here's all the bosses in order for me to better explain what I mean:
| |
| *O'Chunks - Mid-boss of Chapter 1-3, 5-2, & 5-4, Boss of Chapter 8-1
| |
| *Fracktail - Boss of Chapter 1-4
| |
| *Mimi - Boss of Chapter 2-4, 6-2, & 8-2
| |
| *Bowser - Boss of Chapter 3-1
| |
| *Big Blooper - Boss of Chapter 3-2
| |
| *Dimentio - Boss of Chapter 3-3 & 8-3
| |
| *Francis - Boss of Chapter 3-4, optional mid-boss of Chapter 8-2
| |
| *Mr. L & Brobot - Bosses of Chapter 4-4
| |
| *King Croacus - Boss of Chapter 5-4
| |
| *Brobot L-Type - Boss of Chapter 6-1 Redux
| |
| *Underchomp - Boss of 7-2
| |
| *Bonechill - Boss of Chapter 7-4
| |
| *Count Bleck and Super Dimentio - Bosses of Chapter 8-4
| |
| Every boss, even O'Chucks, is fought at the end of a level at least once.I'd be fine with classifying them all as simply "bosses", because that's all this game seems to have in terms of major enemies. If we need to classify any of these as mini-bosses, the only ones that "fit" would be O'Chunks and Francis. 22:05, 6 July 2017 (EDT)
| |
| :In regard to minibosses, I think we should just leave SPM alone. The game simply does not draw a clear line between "boss" and "miniboss". The bosses are presented relatively equally and all get unique themes (aside from Big Blooper and Shadoo), unlike the rest of the Paper Mario games where major bosses get unique themes while the mid-bosses all share a general "miniboss" theme. 22:20, 6 July 2017 (EDT)
| |
| ::Regardless of where they are fought within levels, it is there placement within chapters that matters, as that is the analogue to worlds in this game. Boom Boom is fought at the end of castle levels in SMB3 and NSMBU, but he's still a miniboss. Same goes for O'Chunks, Big Blooper, and the rest. And 7feet, the previous Paper Mario games did not make any distinction either, Boss themes mean nothing. Doc von Schmeltwick 22:29, 6 July 2017 (CT)
| |
| :::No. No, no, no. It does not work like that. We cannot just consider everything not fought at the end of a chapter or world a miniboss. That is exactly why the category had to be hosed down to begin with. And claiming that "boss themes mean nothing" is nonsense. They're not everything, but of course they mean something. They're part of the presentation. The mid-bosses share a theme because they're "less important" than the chapter bosses. Not that that's the single defining criterion for what makes a miniboss, but the point is if a game does not actually draw a fine line between "boss" and "miniboss", then there is absolutely no good reason to be forcing the category on it. 00:13, 7 July 2017 (EDT)
| |
| ::::If we're going down that route, I'd like to point out that virtually no game has actually ever referred to a miniboss as a miniboss by the word itself, or anything other than implication, an implication shared with the SPM minibosses. They are presented in an identical manner, ie a lesser boss. Doc von Schmeltwick 0:05, 7 July 2017 (CT)
| |
| :::::The statement is technically incorrect: in-game data of Paper Mario: Color Splash, such as the unit data table here, refer to zako boss and boss, the latter are of course the Koopalings and Bowser, with the former being the other bosses. The distinction is not as arbitrary as it may sound. Still, I don't have a dump of Super Paper Mario, so I don't know how developers classify the bosses in the game.--Mister Wu (talk) 05:51, 7 July 2017 (EDT)
| |
| ::::::Doc von Schmeltwick noted that no boss is ever referred to as mid-boss or mini-boss in any game. I would like to note the page Superboss is about to be deleted, partially for the fact that superboss is a fan term. Could the same scenario apply here?

| :::::::At the moment, I only have information on Paper Mario: Color Splash and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, both games that do not feature Superbosses, so I cannot say anything direct on the matter of Superbosses. | |
|
| |
| this, specifically.
| |
|
| |
| does anyone have any idea where this upload came from? i can find no mention of it online anywhere. i'm particularly curious about this because the khinsider tracks are much cleaner than direct rips from the game, and are even at double the sample rate! the khinsider tracks are 44.1khz, but the SPM game files only have them at 22.05khz (besides a few outliers which are 32khz). there are even unused jingles! as far as i can tell, there is a similar soundtrack upload for TTYD on the site, same increased music quality and all. it's really strange - if someone had found all the samples and recreated the tracks from scratch, you'd think there would be a thread about it on some forum somewhere, or they'd be on Church of Kondo, or anything...
| |
|
| |
| i only have a few small leads: it was reuploaded to Sitting on Clouds, and that page has an Amazon link, but it is both dead and the URL suggests it's for a completely different game anyway. the khinsider page claims the soundtrack release is from 2013, so maybe the Mr. L track was lifted from the Year of Luigi CD release that happened that year. the cover image appears to be based on the JP/EU box art - this has a small page curl graphic overlapping the logo, but there are a lot of official Nintendo promotional images of differing sizes floating around that it could be based on (likely this one, which appears to be official). i did a search on TinEye but none of the matches were this specific square Original Sound Version image, so unfortunately i haven't been able to determine when it first appeared on the internet. Google gets a lot closer but none of the images seem to be dated at first and they definitely don't let you sort by date, either, which is a little frustrating.
| |
|
| |
| as for where the files themselves come from, i have a few ideas, but nothing concrete. i had initially thought they might be from the Wii U eShop version, but i looked up some footage and the music matched the Wii ingame files. the disc I've owned since childhood is a North American Rev. 2 copy, so maybe other regions got higher quality music files? there's plenty of room on the disc, considering the extracted files for SPM come out to under 500 megabytes.
