What's your opinion? Or should I update the information on the [[Barrel]] page, because there they're seen as obstacles thrown by Donkey Kong... | == Sandbox ==
| |
| It's the same type of thing as ''Super Mario 64'' and ''Super Mario Sunshine'' in that it's mostly sandboxy, but with some levels that are linear [[Bowser in the Dark World]], for example. However, it's not as sandboxy as ''[[Donkey Kong 64]]'' (which only had Hideout Helm as a "linear" level, and even then, the challenges for unlocking the doors could be done in any order) and definitely not as much as [[Minecraft]]. So, is it a sandbox style? The answer is yes, just not the ultimate level of sandbox. [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 01:02, 29 November 2017 (EST)
| |
| :I think the point of contention is whether the term ''sandbox'' is understandable for the readers. I think Nintendo used it to distinguish ''Super Mario Odyssey'', a game based on various sub-worlds separated one from the others, from ''[[ZeldaWiki:The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild|The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild]]'', an actual open-world game with just one main world, so I support the use of the term, but I'm not from a country with English as first language, so I don't know how much this term is understandable or creates confusion instead.--[[User:Mister Wu|Mister Wu]] ([[User talk:Mister Wu|talk]]) 06:21, 29 November 2017 (EST)

| == Picture Match Part and Puzzle Part Articles ==
| |
|
| |
| So, I was thinking of creating articles for the [[Picture Match Part]]s and [[Puzzle Part]]s, but I wasn't sure whether I should merge the two different types, [[Puzzle Part (Lake Kingdom)]] with [[Puzzle Part (Metro Kingdom)]] and [[Picture Match Part (Goomba)]] with [[Picture Match Part (Mario)]] or if I should make separate articles for all four of them. I think doing them seperate would be the best but I want someone else's input. {{User:LuigiMaster123/sig}} 01:29, 3 December 2017 (EST)
| |
| :Not sure about the Puzzle Parts. As for the Picture Match Parts, I don't think those warrant articles to begin with. They should simply be merged with the [[Picture Match]] article (whenever its created). {{User:7feetunder/sig}} 01:34, 3 December 2017 (EST)
| |
| ::I didn't even think of creating an article for the actual Picture Match minigame. I still think the Puzzle Parts should be separate pages, but I'll see what other users think. {{User:LuigiMaster123/sig}} 02:04, 3 December 2017 (EST)

| Considering previous "minigames" such as [[Manta Ray Surfing]], [[Bob-omb Blasting]], and the likes from ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'', it makes sense to create a page for Picture Match. | The exact same goals for Seven stars super jump challenge, plus both are jumping challenges.

| |
| Mario Run once held an Odyssey-themed event before the game was released. I can’t put it in "references in later games" because the event was held before the game’s release. | |
| :Well, yeah, I think it could go either way. Let's see other users' opinions on this. {{User:Toadette the Achiever/sig}} 20:19, 9 April 2018 (EDT)
| |
| ::Much depends if they are referencing a baseball game for the Nintendo 64. | |
| :We're talking about ''Super Mario Odyssey'', which the developers stated being based on ''Super Mario 64'' in many ways - mainly game and level design. Of course, the 64 of ''Paper mario: The Thousand-Year Door'' is rather a reference to the system; a more fitting example might be the ''64 MHz'' in the ''Mario Kart 8'' version of N64 Toad's Turnpike, which can be a reference to both ''Mario Kart 64'' and the Nintendo 64 as well. I'm not sure that you can separate the two things, as said games have ''64'' in the name.--[[User:Mister Wu|Mister Wu]] ([[User talk:Mister Wu|talk]]) 20:43, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

| I think I might understand what your saying.... you're saying it's a reference to the system but because the game's based on Mario 64 by extention that also makes it a Mario 64 reference?[[User:Pikmin theories|Pikmin theories]] ([[User talk:Pikmin theories|talk]]) 20:54, 10 April 2018 (EDT)
| |
| :I'm saying that the game is explicitly based on ''Super Mario 64'' as the developers openly said that. Therefore, those ''64'' might be referencing exclusively the ''Nintendo 64'' system, but it's impossible to tell until we find more specific references, as ''64'' is also the part of the ''Super Mario 64'' name that distinguishes it from the other [[Super Mario (series)|''Super Mario'' games]].--[[User:Mister Wu|Mister Wu]] ([[User talk:Mister Wu|talk]]) 21:19, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

| == Checkpoint locations ==
| |
| We have to address this issue sooner or later, might as well be sooner.
| |
|
| |
| The ''Super Mario Odyssey'' [[Template:SMO kingdoms|kingdoms template]] currently lists every single checkpoint in the game, with links (mostly red) to each and every one of them, as if to suggest we should actually create articles for all of them. We should ''not''. Do we have articles for every Power Moon? No. Do we have articles for every [[List of treasures in Wario: Master of Disguise|treasure]] in ''Wario: Master of Disguise''? No. Should we give articles to every single solitary checkpoint in ''Super Mario Odyssey'' just because they have a name? No, no, a thousand times ''no''. We don't split Windswept Valley from [[Tiny-Huge Island]], nor do we split Hoohoo Mountain Base from [[Hoohoo Mountain]]. Something must be done.
| |
|
| |
| There was a [[MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive/51#Do_not_create_Super_Mario_Odyssey_sublocation_pages|proposal]] about this last year which the proposer ended up canceling. The problem with this proposal was that it wasn't clear enough about exactly which locations should get articles and which shouldn't. So I went over them and organized them into groups: what we should keep, what we ''might'' want to keep, and what we should get rid of.
| |
|
| |
| '''KEEPERS:''' These are the areas that I think should stay. It includes three different kinds of areas.
| |
| # Towns with unique music from the rest of the kingdom (Tostarena Town, Peronza Plaza).
| |
| # Sub-areas that cause the name of the area to appear in big white text when entered (Underground Power Plant, Underwater Tunnel to the Lighthouse), or large, defined structures that contain such areas (New Donk City Hall). The only exceptions are New Donk City Hall Interior (which will be merged with the hall itself) and Deepest Underground (which is just an extension of Underground Temple and should be merged with it).
| |
| # Well-defined structures and major landmarks that don't already meet the previous criteria (Tostarena Ruins, Mayor Pauline Commemorative Park, Glass Palace).
| |
|
| |
| *Areas: Top-Hat Tower, Tostarena Town, Tostarena Ruins, Jaxi Ruins, Inverted Pyramid, Underground Temple, Water Plaza, Sky Garden Tower, Deep Woods, Secret Flower Field, New Donk City Hall, Underground Power Plant, Mayor Pauline Commemorative Park, Shiveria Town, Icicle Cavern, Hollow Crevasse, Wind-Chill Cavern, Snowy Mountain, Snowline Circuit, Iceburn Circuit, Glass Palace, Underwater Tunnel to the Lighthouse, Peronza Plaza, Underground Moon Caverns, Wedding Hall, Rabbit Ridge Tower
| |
|
| |
| '''BORDERLINE:''' Ones I'm not quite sure about. These locations are notable to varying degrees, and may or may not deserve articles in the long run. I'm leaning towards keeping them for now since the main point of this is weed out the really bad ones.

| *Areas: Central Plaza, Desert Oasis, Moe-Eye Habitat, Forest Charging Station, New Donk City Hall Plaza, Outdoor Café, Beach House, Rolling Canyon, Lighthouse, Hot Spring Island, Goomba Woods, Mushroom Pond

|
| |
| '''DELETE:''' Everything not listed above belongs in the garbage, but here are some specific examples:
| |
| *Any checkpoints that are just an "entrance" to or part of a greater location (Tostarena Ruins Entrance, Tostarena Ruins Sand Pillar, Water Plaza Entrance, New Donk City Hall Rooftop).
| |
| *Any of the "islands in the sky" that paintings lead to (Southwestern Floating Island, Diving Platform). They're just platforms with a Power Moon on them. Not notable enough.
| |
| *Meaningless, nondescript checkpoint locations (Tostarena Northwest Reaches, Ocean Trench East/West, Top of the Peak Climb).
| |
|
| |
| I plan to make a proposal out of this soon, with options to keep the "keepers" only, include the "borderlines", or everything. It will, of course, be preliminary. If we keep the "borderline" articles, we can always weed out the ones we don't want with later proposals. Conversely, later proposals can call for the creation of articles previously deemed unworthy. There is absolutely no perfect solution to this problem, since in several cases, what qualifies as "notable enough" to have a page is subjective. However, we ''need'' to draw a line. So, any thoughts or questions? {{User:7feetunder/sig}} 21:09, 13 February 2019 (EST)

|
| |
| : While I agree that some of the locations are borderline mundane, I feel that if the developers placed a checkpoint at that location and named it, it was significant enough for the player to return to. Half of the articles are already done, and I actually would be willing to finish the last half off if nobody minds. It's always possible to delete after everything's done later, so it can't hurt to have all the pages and then clear up the garbage later...

| :::@Alex95: You can see how much is done by looking at the [[Template:SMO kingdoms|kingdoms template]]. As mentioned, about half of them have been made.
| |
| :::@4e696e6a6f795844: I don't see the point in waiting to create a bunch of articles that are just going to be deleted. It will be a waste of time and effort, and I've already been waiting a ''year'' for this. {{User:7feetunder/sig}} 21:22, May 10, 2020 (EDT)

| I think that this is a good idea, and that the "borderline" locations should be kept since they are locations that have a slightly different environment than the rest of the kingdom, such as Desert Oasis having water and palm trees and Goomba woods having Goombas and pine trees. {{User:Matthew aka Mario}} 10:41, April 12, 2021

| == I have a suggestion. ==
| |
|
| |
| I was going to do this but the page is protected so I couldn't. Anyway, I think that under section 2.1 Controls, we should remove the "Single Player Controls" and "Two Player Controls" labels from the column names, as Pro Controllers and dual Joy-Con can also be used in 2-Player mode, including for controlling Cappy. I believe the labels should instead read "Dual Joy-Con/Pro Controller" and "Horizontal Joy-Con". Since horizontal Joy-Con can only be used in 2-Player mode, I suppose you could add "(Two Player Mode only)" to the Horizontal Joy-Con column label, but you get the gist. | Does anyone else notice Mario needs air underwater but can survive on the moon without a spacesuit? I, for one, think it deserves a mention. [[User:Flogger]]
| |
| :I don't really think so, things like this are pretty random within the series- the same thing occurs in ''Super Mario Galaxy'' and ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', as well as probably a few other games that aren't coming to mind immediately. It's easier to sign just using this <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>, rather than typing out the full link, and you should really leave your name visible when commenting so people know that it's you rather than having to click the link. | ::And Super Paper Mario does the same thing in reverse (can breathe underwater, can't breathe in space). It's something that's been weird and inconsistent across basically the entire franchise's history, I don't think we need to mention it. --{{User:Waluigi Time/sig}} 11:59, January 2, 2020 (EST)

| In official artwork, the globe used uses the map design from this game. Ive made an image showing matching coastlines here. even the lake and an island is present, it is simplified but it is based on it. [[User:RSM|RSM]], hoping to make amends soon. 12:10, March 5, 2022 (EST)

| == Remove Enemy Table Spoils Column? ==
| |
| {{talk}}
| |
| I'm don't think I like spoils section in enemy tables. The big thing here is that almost everything in Odyssey appears in five different contexts with different kinds of rewards. [[Yoofoe]] is probably the big stickler here, considering the Power Moon and the Life Up Heart are from different circumstances yet saying which ones they are would shove much of the Yoofoe article into the enemy table's box. Also [[Cheep Cheep]], where the one you fish out may as well be different objects than the ones you can bump into but both of their "spoils" are lumped together as though they are interacted with in the same way. | :I am biased because I am the person who first started integrating this information for the 3D ''Super Mario'' games many years ago, beginning with ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'', but I believe it is brief and valuable information. What an enemy drops when defeated sometimes varies on the context, but I feel like that is information that can be further stipulated on their respective enemy articles. Simply having quick cursory context clarifying that enemies sometimes drop things different from others provided mechanical context that I think is nice. - [[User:Nintendo101|Nintendo101]] ([[User talk:Nintendo101|talk]]) 22:44, August 23, 2024 (EDT)

| == Does the Roll Cancel exist? ==
| |
| I tried to do a Roll Cancel, but there seems to not be any kind of visual indicator or unique effect. Mechanics relating to ending a roll quickly aren't listed on Roll. This page's controls section is based heavily on the Prima guide, but the official excerpt includes the control scheme and does not have an entry for Roll Cancel. Can Mario cancel a roll at will (therefore being better at Spin Dashing than Sonic the Hedgehog) or is the Roll Cancel just a pipe dream? | Ah. I misread the instruction. I was pressing A and B and then when that didn't work I pressed X and Y. It works by pressing A and X or B and Y. (Or perhaps A and Y or B and X if you're a rebel) This is one of those oddballs isn't it. The "roll cancel" is just cancelling a Roll into a Cap Throw, so it doesn't even have it's own animation. On the other hand, no other combination of inputs can work this way, since A causes Long Jump and X makes the roll go faster. And it isn't just canceling the Long Jump with a Cap Throw because Long Jumps are accompanied by Mario's hollers, which aren't heard with this input. Roll Cancel stands, though maybe we can change the name to "Cancel a roll" so it is less name-like? [[User:Salmancer|Salmancer]] ([[User talk:Salmancer|talk]]) 11:15, December 23, 2024 (EST)

| I think that this is a case where I would sacrifice specificity for clarity. "press {{button|switch|y}} or {{button|switch|x}} and {{button|switch|b}} or {{button|switch|a}} at the same time" is really hard to parse, even if its right. I'd try "press one button from both pairs of face buttons at the same time" [[User:Salmancer|Salmancer]] ([[User talk:Salmancer|talk]]) 11:22, December 23, 2024 (EST)
