There is a number of issues with tightrope being included here. It is included in a really awkward and extremely clunky way in this article for seemingly no reason at all other than that it's a rope. This is evidenced by how the paragraph for the tightrope section opens like it already is its own article, even going to the lengths of boldfacing the first mention of a tightrope. This further makes it so that the article at its current state reads like two articles that are haphazardly glued together in a really awful manner. Upon a closer inspection of how the two subjects work mechanically within the frameworks of the games they're featured in, they don't even act similarly. The only resemblance to similarity is how the rope mentioned from Super Mario World wiggles from side to side but that is a really big stretch. Why this is allowed to be is beyond me, and this needs a change.

This one's a bit complicated. I consider "tightrope" and "wire" to be the same thing primarily because of Super Mario Sunshine, where they can be both walked along and hung/spun from. I'd see that as a sort of "turning point" between how they worked, and the looser physics structure of Sunshine compared to later 3D games is also considerable.

In Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, there are horizontal bars embedded into the sides of terrain that Mario can swing from. He is able to attain greater heights on the uppermost arch of a swing from a bar. Within the contexts of these games, this is a unique way of clinging and attaining height that is only shared with the trapeze (another type of horizontal bar), and not something like a pole or tree. These bars are currently under the article titled "nail", a name from the SMG2 Prima guide, but this seems to be a conjectural or offhanded name, rather than a intentional localization choice from Nintendo. In Japanese, these bars are mentioned in the Shogakukan Super Mario Encyclopedia in both titles' Objects sections under the name 鉄棒 (tetsubō). This is the Japanese term for Horizontal bar, rods one may see in gymnastics or circus acrobatics. This makes mechanical sense, as Mario swings from the "nails" in SMG and SMG2 the same way a performer would. It is a discrete function.

"Nails" appear in Super Mario Odyssey (this time referred to and aforementioned as "bars" in the Prima Guides, which may seem more general, but is probably more accurate). Their appearance in SMO is currently meaningfully integrated in the wiki, with only some of applications of these bars currently under the conjecturally titled "rotating bar" article. (As a side note, the name "rotating bar" is already occupied by an object from Super Mario 64. More details here.) Originally, I was planning to lump these all together under one article. However, with the recent release of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, it has become apparent to me that there are visually and mechanically similar objects (previously localized as "wires" or "bars" in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series) that are currently lumped here under Rope. This was superficially odd to me, because from a mainline Super Mario perspective, they way one interacts with ropes are very different from how one interacts with these horizontal bars. However, from DK perspective, this seemed to have made sense. In the Donkey Kong game released on the Game Boy, the predecessor to MvDK, Mario declaratively is swinging from ropes (in both Japanese page 9 and English booklets page 11). It is understandable to assume that subsequent games that feature the same swinging move are being used on the same object. However, in the original GBA Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario is now stated to swing from wires in the English booklet (i.e. not ropes), and on the Japanese MvDK site, this object is said to be... 鉄棒 (tetsubō). It is a high bar. While ropes served this purpose in the GB Donkey Kong, Mario is swinging from the same bar object in MvDK that later appears in SMG, SMG2, and SMO.

With this clarity, I offer two choices on how to best reflect this information:
# Merge nail and rotating bar with rope – this would remain consistent with the current article, but it would not reflect the perceivably intentional design choice to make this object not rope in Mario vs. Donkey Kong onward, as well as their distinct designs (i.e. a metal, inflexible horizontal rod is not rope). Further, with the exception of the Game Boy Donkey Kong and Super Mario Sunshine, the player character cannot perform the same function on a bar that they can on rope.

# Split wire/bar from rope into a separate article – this article would incorporate the material from "nail" and "rotating bar" too, and would not have the problems that Choice #1 has. "Wire" seems to be the name most recently used in the Nintendo Switch version of MvsDK, which would be the name of this article. If remakes are to be excluded (I am unsure if we have adopted policy changes after the release of Super Mario RPG), then the most recent name is "bar" from the Odyssey Prima Guide, and would also be serviceable.

# Do nothing to rope – while the bars from SMG, SMG2, and SMO are justifiably discrete objects from "ropes", comments raised by Doc von Schmeltwick below has made it apparent that what I originally perceived as their equivalency in Mario vs. Donkey Kong may not necessarily be the case, so it may make more sense to just leave "wire" lumped with rope as is. It is worth mentioning that Mario vs. Donkey Kong was developed by Nintendo Software Technology Corporation, which is made up of English-speakers in the United States. What might have been interpreted as a high bar by Japanese staff for the website may have always been understood/intended to be wires.

#ReeceeYT Per all.
#Arend See comments.
#MegaBowser64 per
#Camwoodstock After much thought, well, this just kinda seems like the most obvious choice for the time being. Per Biggestman especially; bars sure aren't ropes. ;P
#FanOfYoshi Per all.

Do nothing to rope
#Nintendo101 My perspective has changed. While I maintain that bars should not be considered rope, I do not believe that wires should be considered the same thing as bars and should remain lumped here with ropes. That is different from how I framed this proposal.
#LinkTheLefty If the second option passes, then we may have to do something about the Wire Spin/Jump move to account for Game Boy Donkey Kong since there's no good older name for it, and that. That just ain't right.

Does the split option merge those into the nail article? You say 'ideally,' but not certainly. Also, BTW, the Japanese MvsDK manual also calls them wires. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:33, February 22, 2024 (EST)
:Sorry, I should have been more clear. The split information would go into a "Wire" article. The information on "nail" and "rotating bar" would be merged with that. - Nintendo101 (talk) 21:46, February 22, 2024 (EST)
::Do you have a PDF to the Japanese MvDK booklet? I could not track one down. - Nintendo101 (talk) 21:51, February 22, 2024 (EST)
:::Not on-hand. It's cited on the page itself, though. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:12, February 22, 2024 (EST)
::::Ah, I see. Thank you. On page 4. I suspect they are still intended to be the same object if the Japanese site is comfortable using 鉄棒, and they remain mechanically and visually comparable. However, if contentious, the proposal could be narrowed to just the "horizontal bars" from SMG, SMG2, and SMO. In that case I would still need to use the article name "Bar", which currently redirects to here to "rope". - Nintendo101 (talk) 22:29, February 22, 2024 (EST)
:::::I also want to point out the Mario Spin.jpg for the ropes in DK94 appears more rigid, though in-game it's far less clear as they are just lines pointing in different directions. They also appear in varying lengths in both it and MvsDK, being functionally similar to the Sunshine ropes (not to mention that they all are able to have Sparks travelling on them...) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:35, February 22, 2024 (EST)
::::::I did not think the artwork was relevant because rope can be made out of a lot of different things, and would appear straight when taught, which is the context with which Mario can perform a Wire Jump in the GB Donkey Kong. Wire Traps are called Sparkies in Japan and I understood that they only move along ropes, not metal bars. However, you bring up good points considering how the objects in Mvs.DK are not exclusively depicted as metal bars, and are incorperated in-game at various lengths and angles. MvDK wwas developed by an American team that probably intended for them to always be seen as "wires". Tetsubō being on the Japanese site could have been a misinterpretation of the object. I incorporated a third option above that would leave the rope article alone. - Nintendo101 (talk) 12:52, February 23, 2024 (EST)
Here's what I think we should do: keep horizontal ropes on this page, but split the wire/bar from MvDK off of it (maybe also the GB version of DK too, but not sure at the moment). Aside from the bar not being rope at all, there's also the fact that in several cases, a horizontal rope could also be walked on, whereas you can only swing from a bar, as far as I know. In addition, you could merge nail and rotating bar to this new bar article, since they're generally the same idea. 09:48, March 14, 2024 (EDT)
:I think that makes sense. I'm personally a bit wary of having two objects share an article that were independently conceptualized (with wires developed by Nintendo STC in the United States, and bars developed by EAD in Japan) because I'm not sure that is 100% accurate, even if Mario engages with both objects in a similar way. I think this is reflected in how they are integrated in their respective games, and the current names applied to them in Japan. As @Doc von Schmeltwick brings up, the not all of the wires in MvDK are metal rods - some are long and stretched across opposite walls, or are diagonal. I think they are suppose to be like power lines, especially since most levels in MvsDK are cityscapes. Bars are consistently short, horizontal metal rods in the sides of terrain. They do not span wide spaces. These are some of the reasons why I backed off of my own proposal. But again, I understand the rationale.
:My preference is to have bar be separate from rope, but leave everything else alone, including the information on the wires from MvsDK (hence my vote, because, to the best of my knowledge, it wouldn't require any change to the rope article since the bar info is currently in nail and rotating bar; the only difference would potentially be an appropriation of the bar redirect that is currently unused).
:I do think there are too many independent subjects lumped together under rope, especially since quite a few them mechanically work differently from one another and look different from each other. It makes looking for specific subjects feel unintuitive and unhelpful. How ropes are integrated in Super Mario Sunshine makes the barriers between subjects a little blurry, since much of them are like power lines and Mario can swing from them too, but that is a discussion for another day. - Nintendo101 (talk) 18:13, March 14, 2024 (EDT)
::Admittedly it's a very tricky situation. I've been contemplating myself for a while what exactly could or should be split from the rope article, but I know one thing: bars and ropes aren't the same thing. For now, I'll vote for the split option, and stand by with what I said. 09:08, March 16, 2024 (EDT)
@LinkTheLefty: I don't understand your argument for doing nothing. What, and especially why, would we have to do "something about the Wire Spin/Jump move to account for Game Boy Donkey Kong since there's no good older name for it"? The Wire Spin article already accounts for the GB version of Donkey Kong, which even has an alternate name with "Bar Spin", thanks to the 3DS Virtual Console port's manual. The only thing I can see what we could further do about it is to merge Super Mario Sunshine's Super Whirl Jump and Wario Land: Shake It's Bar Spin to it, but that has nothing to do with having to account to the GB Donkey Kong. What else is there that needs to be done if Wire/Bar gets split? 08:34, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:They're called "ropes" originally, no? Wait, I'm a little confused - is the second option going to include the Donkey  Kong horizontal rope in the split wire/bar article? LinkTheLefty (talk) 09:40, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
::@LinkTheLefty when I drafted this proposal, I anticipated the Donkey Kong rope info would stay here. I thought of "MvsDK wire" and "DK rope" as objects that mechanically work the same way but are not suppose to be the same literal object, in the same way we have articles for both trees and poles.
::However, while I maintain that "bars" should not be considered rope and I think I conveyed that point successfully, I no longer think wires can be considered the same thing as bars and should remain lumped with ropes. I think what I initially perceived in Mario vs. Donkey Kong was a misread - those objects are not suppose to be high bars, they are suppose to be power lines (hence whey they're called "wires" and largely occur in cityscapes), which is exactly what the ropes in Mario Sunshine are suppose to be, and potentially what the ones in the GB Donkey Kong were always intended as too. This is why I no longer support my proposal: I think wires should remain lumped with rope, while bars should be split, which is different from what the current proposal covers. (When I came to this impression, too many days had passed for me to change the focus of the proposal.) Curious to know what others think. - Nintendo101 (talk) 10:25, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:::Given that the 3DS Virtual console manual for Donkey Kong GB calls them bars instead of wires, and that the Nintendo Switch remake of Mario vs Donkey Kong make the wires resemble metallic bars much moreso than power line wires (plus that these "wires" are very rigid and the devs make zero effort in any of these games to make these wires bouncy like in Mario Sunshine), it's very understandable to think that these are supposed to be high bars, since not even Nintendo themselves seem to know what these are supposed to be. 10:37, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
::::Arend, you're thinking of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong 3DS Virtual Console instruction manual; Donkey Kong still calls them ropes. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:05, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:::::My bad. Guess that means Nintendo doesn't seem to know what specifically the MvDK wires/bars are. Though, it appears that the Super Game Boy Player's Guide calls the DK GB ropes "Horizontal Bars" at one point. 13:09, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
::::::Wait, really? Because that is the name used in the Shogakukan Encyclopedia for the bars in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Do you know what page? - Nintendo101 (talk) 13:27, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:::::::I just got that info from the Rope page itself, and the Horizontal Bar name it's cited to Page 36 of that guide. I'll try to look it up on the internet to verify it. 14:18, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:::::::Yep, Page 36. Though, interestingly, the guide also calls this a "horizontal bar" (in lower-case) on Page 34. Doesn't seem to ever state these are ropes, although the guide only goes through a handful of levels from the first couple of worlds (a bit of a shame, I was wondering how it would call those diagonal bars). 14:26, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
::::::::Thanks a bunch. I do think it's relevant to note that the Super Guide is English text written about a game developed by Japanese speakers, where some context may have been lost. To me, it looks like what are called "horizontal bars" on these pages are being supported by transmission tower, which is what you use to suspend wire ropes, not metal gymnastic rods. I did not write this down when I saw it, but the move Mario performs in GB DK localized as the Wire Spin is referred to as a specific real-world maneuver in Japan used on high bars in gymnastics/acrobatics, so that could be why the English localizers at Nintendo Power interpreted them as high bars. In the actual Japanese text, this object is just called "rope". I think they probably intended for it to be wire ropes that Mario can just do this acrobatic move off of.
::::::::The sequel Mario vs. Donkey Kong was developed in the United States by English speakers, so I think it is safe to assume the name for this object in English should take contextual priority over the Japanese one. So the fact that they call it a "wire", and not a horizontal bar, leads me to think it is actually just suppose to be wire rope. It does not look one-to-one in the actual games to power lines, imo, but that is still what it is suppose to be, I think. - Nintendo101 (talk) 15:34, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
:::::::::Well, yeah, the Player's Guides (not Super Guide; the "Super" is in the title because this Player's Guide happens to be about the Super Game Boy) are usually American guides, unlike those released by Shogakukan. But it does make me wonder what a Japanese guide would call these things. If what you're saying checks, then a Japanese official Donkey Kong GB guide would also call these wires. 16:12, March 17, 2024 (EDT)
