Why does it say the poison mushroom is similar to the mini mushroom? It's not, a mini mushroom is a beneficial item (even though it makes Mario vulnerable and weaker) while poison mushrooms are always bad. And do poison mushrooms make mario small in most games, or just a few? They usually just make him take damage. I think that trivia item is misleading. {{User:CrystalYoshi/sig}}

I had been voting for the awards, and one of the choices for the worst obstacle is "Poison Mushroom/Rotten Mushroom". Likewise, the Rotten Mushroom is given an internal filename that's the same name as the Poison Mushroom: "PoisonKinoko". Perhaps there's a potential to merge the Rotten Mushroom page into the Poison Mushroom page.

First of all, if the two had to be merged, I feel like we should merge Rotten Mushroom to Poison Mushroom instead of the other way around: the Poison Mushroom appears way more often than the Rotten Mushroom.<br>Even then, items looking and acting similar while sharing an internal filename is not exactly enough to deem the two as one and the same, I feel. The "Cursed Mushroom" in the early ''Mario Party'' games appears to be a different, but similar item, akin to Rotten Mushroom above. While it was initially translated as "Poison Mushroom," later translations were more faithful. :I have also thought the same thing regarding this, and I think I would largely be in support of splitting these pages. One thing I think is important to note regarding this issue is that Poison Mushrooms themselves had much less of an established design at the time of the early ''Mario Party'' games, making it highly possible that the design similarity is something of a coincidence, though it appears that ''[[Mario Party]] 1'' refers to its similarly-designed Poison Mushroom (not a usable item, but a consequence of landing on a [[Mushroom Space]]) as a Poison Mushroom in all regions. On the other hand, the concept of a "cursed" mushroom and its effect is probably derived from Shy Guy's Curse House, which appears on [[Mystery Land]] in ''[[Mario Party 2]]'', which has the same effect as the later Cursed Mushrooms but is thematically unrelated to mushrooms in any way. OK, so this one needs a bit of explanation. In ''[[Mario Party 2]]'', there was a board event on [[Mystery Land]] called Shy Guy's Curse House, which allowed players to place curses on themselves or each other, which would reduce the cursed player's next dice roll to a range of 1-3. In ''[[Mario Party 3]]'', an item known in Japanese as のろいキノコ (''Noroi Kinoko'', "Cursed Mushroom") was introduced, which was localized in the English release as "Poison Mushroom". This mushroom, which has a purple cap, green spots, and angry eyes, allows the user to choose a player and reduce that player's next dice roll to a range of 1-3. In the same game, one of the events on a [[Bowser Space]] is Bowser's Curse, which reduces everyone's next dice roll to a range of 1-3.

The item returned in the GameCube era as the [[Cursed Mushroom Orb]] (Cursed Mushroom Capsule in ''[[Mario Party 5]]''), where it had basically the same appearance, including a purple cap, green spots, and angry eyes, as well as the same Japanese name, just more accurately localized this time. It now reduced the player's dice roll to a range of 1-5. After ''[[Mario Party 7]]'', where the Cursed Mushroom was granted by [[Koopa Kid Space]]s instead of as a usable item, the Cursed Mushroom disappeared, but its ''Mario Party 3'' effects returned in ''[[Mario Party Superstars]]'' as the [[Creepy Dice Block|Cursed Dice Block]], later localized as the Creepy Dice Block in ''[[Super Mario Party Jamboree]]'', where it once again reduces a player's dice roll to a range of 1-3. See the connection here? Curses reduce a player's dice roll to a range of 1-3, or 1-5 in some cases, and as far as I can tell, poison is never mentioned outside the localization of ''Mario Party 3''.

It seems to me that the localizers named the ''Mario Party 3'' item the Poison Mushroom probably due to its visual likeness to ''[[Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels]]''{{'}} Poison Mushroom (and perhaps due to its likeness to ''[[Mario Party]]''{{'}}s Poisonous Mushroom, as I'll discuss below). Perhaps noticing the trend of how these effects are named when localizing ''Mario Party 5'', they later decided to translate the name more directly, getting us the Cursed Mushroom, which was never meant to be the same thing as the Poison Mushroom anyways; it's a mushroom that curses you, not one that poisons you. Splitting these pages would make this distinction clear to readers of the wiki and reduce confusion caused by an imperfect localization <strike>(even if the ''Mario Party 3'' item will always be the Poison Mushroom to me)</strike>.

If successful, this proposal would split off information concerning the following games from this article:

To play devil's advocate, I ought to mention the one point of contention that I can currently see here: the Poisonous Mushroom that can appear when landing on a [[Mushroom Space]] in ''Mario Party''. While it has a totally different effect (causing the player to lose a turn instead of reducing their maximum dice roll), it shares its name in Japanese (at least as far as I'm aware; I'm going off of what is included in the existing article) with the Poison Mushroom of ''Lost Levels'', while having a very similar in-game sprite to ''Mario Party 3''{{'}}s <strike>Poison</strike> ''Cursed'' Mushroom, including a purple cap, green spots, and angry eyes. In this case, I'd argue that this is most similar to the current status of the [[Super Mushroom]] article, which includes information on ''Mario Party 2'' and ''Mario Party 3''{{'}}s Golden Mushroom, which shares its appearance with the [[Golden Dash Mushroom]] (at least as it appeared in ''[[Mario Kart 64]]'', the most recent game in the ''Mario Kart'' series at the time), but its Japanese name with the Super Mushroom of the ''Super Mario'' platformers (not even getting into the naming localization confusion between these two). In all, I think that this is still a well-justified split, but voters should be aware of this detail.

Edit: EvieMaybe pointed out to me on the MarioWiki Discord server that this proposal didn't clarify that this item is ever actually called a "Cursed Mushroom" verbatim in-game (as opposed to a Cursed Mushroom Orb/Capsule). It is called just a Cursed Mushroom in at least two places: in the [[Card Party]] mode of ''Mario Party 5'' (where it also has its usual effect of reducing someone's dice roll to a range of 1-3) and when granted by [[Koopa Kid]] in ''Mario Party 7''.
