:He's Mr. Game & Watch, as seen in his trophy descriptions in the Super Smash Bros. series. MarioComix 03:23, 25 June 2011 (EDT)

Should we count his appearances in Rhythm Heaven Fever and Megamix?
He does cameo in Working Dough with his Mario's Cement Factory appearance, but I don't know if that counts. Yellow Sphere Dude 573 (talk) 18:10, 16 December 2017 (EST)

:We have an article for Rhythm Heaven Megamix, which I've noticed gets covered on the pages for characters who've appeared in that game like Ashley and Red, so I don't see why we shouldn't count it here. 23:07, 16 December 2017 (EST)
::We do have a section for cameos, though. Sometimes. Maybe. To be honest, I don't know when we should or shouldn't list a cameo.  At the very least, as Mario jc said, since Megamix has its own page, it can be covered in a separate section. 23:17, 16 December 2017 (EST)
Game & Watch Character ≠ Mr. Game & Watch
This article feels like it's being unreasonably generous which what it considers to be an appearance of Mr. Game & Watch. Mr. G&W as a character was invented for Super Smash Bros. Melee as a representative of all Game & Watch characters combined into one, and that doesn't mean that every appearance of a silhouetted Game & Watch character prior and since is retroactively Mr. G&W. The WarioWare series and Super Mario Odyssey examples are particularly questionable. How are we supposed to know they're referencing Mr. G&W, and not the identical nameless figures in Helmet or Fire? I think for an appearance to count as specifically Mr. Game & Watch it needs to explicitly state his name like Super Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World or otherwise connect pretty strongly to Super Smash Bros. --PopitTart (talk) 17:51, August 1, 2024 (EDT)
:Ignoring the fact that Mr. Game & Watch effectively serves as a composite of every Game & Watch game protagonist that isn't already a pre-existing character (up to and including a literal octopus), looking at the actual images, we don't quite buy the idea that the examples listed are meant to be "the Game & Watch character specifically from Helmet or Fire" any more than they're just meant to be Mr. Game & Watch, because every game's reference to those specific games are, at best, a bit fuzzy. For the WarioWare examples, the Mr. Game & Watch-esque crowd from both Mega Party Games and Smooth Moves don't share any of the poses either of those two have, with only the Touched! emblem sharing any particular resemblance to the Fire character... only in terms of pose, anyways; except, they have a cartoon dust cloud under them, which definitely isn't in the source material. Meanwhile, the Mario Odyssey example seems to be a fusion of the Fire pose and trampoline and the hat from Helmet! 20:46, August 1, 2024 (EDT)
::Brawl: "The guy you're looking at now, Mr. Game & Watch, was a character who appeared in these games." - Otacon <<< This seems like a good enough indicator he's meant to be retroactively considered the same as the "Screen Beans"-type characters in those games. :::I get that in Super Smash Bros. Mr. Game & Watch acts as a composite of all the big-nosed toony Game & Watch characters, but what I'm really getting at is that I don't think references to Game & Watches in general should be counted as The Mr. Game & Watch. It feels like a lot of these references weren't made with Smash in mind, they're just referencing the same material Mr. Game & Watch is. I didn't point out Fire or Helmet to imply that they're specifically the "Actual reference," just that the character designs being used well predate Mr. Game & Watch, suggesting it isn't a cameo of him in particular. Just... a generic Game & Watch inspired figure. --PopitTart (talk) 22:19, August 1, 2024 (EDT)
::::If we're talking about whether the Game & Watch characters appearing in later games have no connection to Mr. Game & Watch, let's look at their designs. Presuming that if the characters appear as they do in the original Game & Watch, we can count that as a reference of the original material without connection to Mr. Game & Watch. However, what's interesting is if you look at the design of these characters (in WarioWare series or Donkey Kong Country Returns), it's subtle but they all clearly draw inspiration from Mr. Game & Watch's design.
::::In Helmet and Parachute, we can see these characters are meant to have "mitten" hands, they have two points corresponding to fingers and thumb. In fact, if you look at most of Mr. Game & Watch's spirits from Super Smash Bros. Ultmate here, you'll see most of them have a clear hand shape, except for those who are holding something. So, if we are referencing just generic Game & Watch people, they should have clear mitten-shaped hands.
::::Yet that is not the case for the cameo appearances in future games such as WarioWare series, Donkey Kong Country Returns, or Super Mario Odyssey. We can see that the hand shapes are either very circular, or in the case of DKC Returns, it matches more his Super Smash Bros. Melee artwork, where it's a bit more oblong. Both of these can be seen in his amiibo poses. Regardless, this abstract hand shape was used specifically for Mr. Game & Watch's design, and it's the one we see being used in the appearances listed on this page. So I do believe that these later games that reference a Game & Watch person are specifically pulling from Mr. Game & Watch's design, hence these are references to him. The discrepancy is more apparent since his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where his animations match the original designs from the games, which show how varied they could be as well, and also show the clear hand shapes used by Game & Watch people in Helmet, Parachute, and Fire.
