The Japanese/British/Italian pronunciation of Mario uses the same sound that is in can or ant. Americans for whatever reason use the sound found in car or bar. The name Mary uses yet a third sound that is reminiscent of air or scare. In short, unless Americans mispronounce Mary, the name should not be labelled as being phonetically similar to a common mispronunciation of Mario's name. Instead it should be labelled as being a pun or at least inspired by the name. | The Japanese/British/Italian pronunciation of Mario uses the same sound that is in can or ant.
