Actually there may be more than 16 characters. If you watch the trailer on the European Mario Tennis Open site, you will notice the trailer says ''"16 CHARACTERS AND MORE TO UNLOCK!"'', which means that there will be more than 16 characters. Nintendo confirmed that some characters can be unlocked in the game and some can be unlocked by scanning QR codes. So what I think (and that is only speculation) it that the players starts of with 12 characters and can unlock 4 more in the game, but by scanning QR codes, he/she can unlock even more characters. But this is not confirmed and only what I speculate. What I just want to point out is the fact that 16 may not be the minimum of playable characters in Mario Tennis Open. {{User:Arend/sig}}

First, nothing you just said makes sense. Second, don't make assumptions that the link is false. It could be completely right! For Baby Mario, for instance, we had potentially "false" info. In the past home console Mario Tennis games, for the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube, there has been an Item Battle sort of mode where Item Boxes appear over the net and every time you hit the ball while you have an item the item gets used.
