I found this story somewhere, then I saw it pop up on Wikipeida, but I forget where I saw it before Wikipedia:

Hah, I just got done playing that minigame. Its a 3 on 1 minigame, where someone rolls a big thing of meat, and 3 other players have to not fall off.

Yes, Bowser & Bowser JR invite everyone to the castle for dinner, then bowser captures them and shrinks them. Pirhana board is the first one.

But turns out, I'm not seeing any analogies to chess pieces in the box art, the manual, or in the game.
