This is something I've stated in a couple discussions before, but let's put this center stage for once.

#Hewer I was originally going to support this proposal since I thought that the series had never officially been called "Mario & Sonic", but it turns out it has been called that: this Iwata Asks interview refers to it as the "Mario & Sonic series" and "Mario & Sonic games", only using the full "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games" title to refer to the first game specifically. So I guess "Mario & Sonic" is the official name.

#Starluxe Per Hewer. We should also add that Iwata Asks interview as a source for the name.

#Salmancer Hewer has evidence for the opposition. The proposal only has vibes. (Also, while I sympathize with saying "Mario & Sonic is not a good name", Nintendo names so many things poorly we might as well roll with all of their decisions.)

#SeanWheeler If we have a crossover between Mario & Sonic that is not at the Olympics (nor Smash) then maybe we could rename it to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (series) to separate it from the new Mario & Sonic series or make it a subseries of that. But for now, let's keep it at the broader Mario & Sonic series.
#BBQ Turtle Per all, especially Hewer and Salmancer. Also something to take in mind is that technically only two of the titles (4 if all versions are included) contain the title "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games" uninterrupted, that being the original and Tokyo 2020. Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are all interrupted, and Rio gets even more complex when you consider Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition. As far as I've seen, it's fairly uncommon for subtitles to be placed in the middle of titles, and even if we didn't have the official source, simply Mario & Sonic seems more consistent with the titling of individual games in the series.
#Nintendo101 Per all.

Fans fully know this as Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Calling just Mario & Sonic would be too confusing and implies that there are other crossovers. Besides, the interview may not be an accurate translation. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 08:50, December 24, 2024 (EST)

:What official sources know something as is what matters, not what fans know it as. Also odd to say that the short name "would be" too confusing as though it's not the name we've been using for 13 years. As for the trustworthiness of the interview, even if it was an "inaccurate" translation (which I doubt), so what? Subjects can have different official names between languages. 09:06, December 24, 2024 (EST)

::I can confirm that in the Japanese version of the interview, the series is systematically referred to as just『マリオ&ソニック』("Mario & Sonic"). 03:21, December 28, 2024 (EST)
Honestly I see both sides on this. I can neither support nor deny. --Johnjohn2001 (talk) 08:42, December 30, 2024 (EST)
