They function nearly identicle, look similar, and is probably just an older version that was remade into the Grand Star. I think Nintendo meant for them to be same thing, just updated look and name. Perhaps a merge?

The only thing that's similar about them is that they're both stars. Their functions have barely anything in common. Considering the amount of splits that have been made for things with the same name, "their name is similar" isn't an argument at all.
#{{User|SuperYoshiBros}} There is only one Giant Star in SM64/SM64DS, and does not count towards the star total (''Unlike other Power Stars, the Giant Star will not increase Mario's Star total once collected''). It looks exactly the same as a regular power star except larger. It also turns Mario into Wing Mario. Meanwhile, there are several Grand Stars in both SMG games, and they count towards the star total. They look like larger power stars but have small balls on the tips. In SMG2, they even transform into portals to other worlds. The only thing that makes these REMOTELY similar at all, is that they look like the Super Star.

Okay, I am not too serious on this proposal, I don't really care, but the stupidity of merging those two gave me quite a laugh. The green star a) functions entirely different, used to break gates and open bowser statues, will star coins are merely large amounts of currency, to buy access to paths as well as movies. Sure, it could be a revamped version of the Giant Star, but who knows for sure? That's not confirmed.
