| Goomba
| |
| A citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom who sided with Bowser when he invaded. Goombas slowly chase after Mario on stubby legs. They're not the toughest creatures and can generally be defeated by jumping on them, which makes them disappear. They have fierce fangs, but they don't seem to serve any purpose. Though a nuisance to Mario, they're decent at baseball and mah-jongg.

| Regarding the above discussion, it's about those in Super Mario 3D World. They have different Japanese names, and functions. One is a chillin' Goomba on a spiked white swim-ring with red stripes, and the other is on an Ice Skate. They're clearly subspecies, and not just Goomba wearing a swim-ring and/or an Ice Skate. Depending on the consensus, i will vote for support if it will pass. They are named in the encyclopedia: Skate Goomba and Innertube Goomba, but since we can't cite the encyclopedia, we'd have to use identifiers. For consistency with Goomba's Shoe and Shoe Goomba. Additionally, if this proposal fails, we'll have to revisit the Goomba's Shoe and Shoe Goomba for consistency.

| == Etymology ==
| |
|
| |
| In the etymology section, it states that they are named after chestnuts because they "look more like chestnuts than shitake mushrooms." I think it's more likely just to be a reference to their color. There is a type of brown mushroom called Chestnut Mushrooms that look closer in shape to Goombas than the wide, flat tops of a shitake. They are called "kuribo kinoko" in Japanese, and are cultivated and eaten in Japan. --157.21.14.65 12:50, September 2, 2021 (EDT)

| As I know from a fan base, Goombas are like mutant mushrooms. This makes me think that Goombas are Mushrooms. I want to know if this is true, because there were no instances in which any Goomba is called a Mushroom on purpose. I am holding a debate to decide whether or not this article should state that goombas are related to Mushrooms. Some reasons are:
| |
| * Goombas look like mushrooms with feet.
| |
| * Mushrooms have a round shape, like Goombas.
| |
| * Koopa Troopas can be called turtles because they look like turtles.
| |
| * Only Rotten Mushrooms and Zombie Mushrooms are technically mutant mushrooms, and it’s almost Halloween, so why not Goombas?

| == Goomba Variant/Relative Ontological Issue ==
| |
|
| |
| There seems to be a sort of inconsistency/irrationality to the way the wiki classifies species that are similar to and/or derived from goombas. I find it very strange that beanies and shrooblets are classified as being "variants" of goombas (despite not being chestnut/mushrooms physically and instead being beans & aliens respectively), while galoombas (which were retroactively renamed and deemed distinct and were originally just the goombas of SMW) are considered to be mere "relatives" of goombas. The principle I see cited in most of these discussions pertaining to these sort of classifications (for example rocky wrenches being either koopas or monty moles) is that if an enemy/species is spiritually/conceptually derived from a more established and older one, then the former can be considered to be a variant of the latter. If this were consistently applied, galoombas, strollin' stus, and wanderin' gooms should definitely be considered to be types of goombas. Ladishchap
| |
| :The reason Galoomba is only a relative and not a variant is because newer games have explicitly stated they're two different-yet-related things ("A Goomba-like foe that is not a Goomba."). Strollin' Stu is more of a conceptual derivative of Goomba via things like Kug, so I'd agree to consider that a variant. Wanderin' Goom I think is best left as is, as it looks more like a Galoomba and doesn't exactly function like either (as in it doesn't attack and gets defeated in one hit). And we considered Shrooblet to be a goomba because...what else could it possibly be other than a shroobified goomba? Even if it's not exactly a brown mushroom with dark brown shoes, enemies don't always have to be the same species or have similar designs to be variants or relatives. But Galoomba was explicitly stated to not be a goomba in later games, so it's not a goomba variant but rather a relative. | :I implore you to read some official profiles we have on Galoomba. The Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten states that these enemies are relatives of Goomba (thus, not variants/derived subjects); furthermore, the Character Museum profile for Galoomba in Mario Party: Star Rush clearly states that Galoombas are NOT Goombas, meaning that they cannot be variants of Goombas at all. Moving over to Goombrat, the description for the Goombrat Statue in Super Mario Run states that "Nobody is quite sure of their exact relation to Goombas" (so if anything, calling them even "relatives" might be a stretch; they're definitely not variants of Goomba, that's for sure). All that remains is Octoomba, who you may quite notice doesn't look much like a Goomba compared to Galoombas and Goombrats; it's a Goomba-shaped space octopus more in common with Octoguy, Rocto and their leaders King Kaliente and Prince Pikante; so by logical deduction, these shouldn't be regarded as variants of Goombas either.<br>Also, "Derived subjects" was to be a counterpart to "Subject origin", which has been discontinued per a passed proposal, due to frequent misuse and general confusion (Subject origin was supposed to be the real-life inspiration for something, but fictional Mario critters gradually began taking that spot too); so, I moved the remaining subjects Beanie and Strollin' Stu to "Relatives" as well. 16:21, August 13, 2024 (EDT)

| ::What even is a variant then? Because I'm still not sure what criteria are being used. If Goombrats aren't a variant of Goombas, are Shymores one of Shy Guys? Sharpeas? Toothys? And why? Blinker (talk) 17:55, August 13, 2024 (EDT)
