| If we are accounting for naming differences in different langauges, then we should account for naming ''similarities'' (and thus merge Kamek with Magikoopa). Of course I'm being a little specious as Kamek has emerged as a distinct character for many audiences, so they should be kept separate in my opinion. Ultimately I think if the proposal agreed that the name should be "Goomba (SMW)" then that's what it should be. It's the official English name of this creature, it just happens to be the same name as another creature. Although personally I would like to see them merged, the name of this article should at least be Goomba, to reflect its official English name and to account for the naming differences in Japanese (by giving this creature its own article in the first place). -- [[User: Son of Suns|Son of Suns]] | | If we are accounting for naming differences in different langauges, then we should account for naming ''similarities'' (and thus merge Kamek with Magikoopa). | ===Merge with Goomba===
| |
| #{{User|Tails777}} My proposal so per me.
| |
| #{{User|Bowser's luma}} They're the same thing, other than the Japanese name. In the SMW section of the Goomba page, it can mention the difference in name, yet they should be in the same article because of the English name. If I were a dude looking for info on SMW Goombas, I'd look in the Goomba article and not find it there. Not everyone knows it is a different name in Japanese just this once and it would be much easier for them to find it in the Goomba article. Please take this one for the good of the browsers, Opposers.
| |
| #{{User|BoygeyDude}} They're not very different. Per All.
| |
| #{{User|DKPetey99}} Just because they look different, does not mean they are different, and their English name is the same, so why does it matter that their Japanese name is slightly different? Per all.
| |
| #{{User|superfiremario}} Per all.
| |
| #{{User|Mario Bros.!}} Paragoomba (SMW) is merged with Paragoomba. Per all.
| |
| | |
| ===Merge with [[Goombob]]===
| |
| #{{User|SWFlash}} Name the differences between these two. So far I've found only one: name.
| |
| ===Leave split===
| |
| #{{User|Goomba's Shoe15}} They look different act different and on top of that they have a different japanese name which is Kuribon while regular Goomba's have the name Kuribō so they were not intended to be the same species much like how spike top and red spike top are not the same species.
| |
| #{{User|UltraMario3000}} Well they have differences, such as that this one is more round, and this kind of Goomba has some different kinds of abilities (one of them is being able to fly around in a bubble).
| |
| #{{User|Magikrazy51}} Per the reasons we keep Boomerang Bro from M&L:SS separate from Boomerang Bro and merge Spookum with Snifit.
| |
| #{{User|Walkazo}} - Per all; per the arguments put forth in the [[MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive_10#Goombas|Proposal that originally split this page out of the main article]]. Different official names in at least one language + different looks + different behaviour = different species. {{tem|Main}} ensures there's no navigation hassles stemming from the logical separation of the two species of Goombas.
| |
| #{{User|Ericss}} There are far more reasons to consider them a different species than to consider them regular Goombas: First, they don't look like regular Goombas. Second, they don't behave as regular Goombas. And third, they have a different Japanese name than regular Goombas. The only reason to say that they aren't a different Goomba species is that the translators at NOA didn't give them a different name, but that's a ridiculous argument to begin with, as a) these enemies and the game they appeared in were designed by the Japanese developers, not by NOA, and b) NOA's translations were inconsistent and had errors back then (ie: Goomba's Shoe was originally translated as Kuribu's Shoe, and later changed to reflect the more sensible name) and should be taken with a grain of salt, especially the original Japanese version contradicts them.
| |
| #{{User|Mario4Ever}} Per Walkazo.
| |
| #{{User|Reddragon19k}} Per Walkazo.
| |
| #{{User|Pokémon Trainer Mario}} Per Goomba's Shoe.
| |
| #{{User|PyroGuy6}} Unlike Round Goombas, these Goombas have a different Japenese name, different behavior, and different looks. Per all.
| |
| #{{User|yoshiyoshiyoshi}} -_-.Per all.
| |
| #{{user|Mario jc}} Per all.
| |
| #{{User|Prince Ludwig}} These Goombas are different. They live on Dinosaur Land. Per all.

| ''@Bowser's luma'' heres a list of proposals that have been decided because of Japanese names [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Pale_Piranha]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Lava_Bubble]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Spookum]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Boomerang_Bro.#Merge_Boomerang_bros_M.26L:SS_to_Boomerang_Bro.]] that ones not based on the japanese name but instead based on the Italian name and i would like to point out you supported that one. [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Sparky]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Big_Boo#Merged_from_Talk:Atomic_Boo]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Yo%27ster_Isle#Merge_Yo.27ster_Island_with_Yoshi.27s_Island]], [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Talk:Gabon#Merge_to_Spike_.28enemy.29]]. So as you can from this list the japanese name often plays a vital role in decisions combined with the physical differences between the two you can clearly see that the goomba's from SMW are not and were not intended to be the same as regular goomba's {{User|Goomba's Shoe15}}

| The ''Super Mario World'' Goomba behaves differently from the basic Goombas, which is why it's separate from the Goomba article. Though this does question why the ''Yoshi's Island'' Goomba doesn't have its own article; it too behaves differently than the basic Goombas. {{User:M&SG/sig}} 07:58, 7 June 2011 (EDT)

| | |
| :@Goomba's Shoe15: Those TPP actually won on a merge. {{unsigned|DKPetey99}}
| |
| ::So? Splits and merges are about the same issue. Splits say that a certain game's enemies look and act significantly differently from the "normal" enemies, and this difference is recognized by at least one branch of Nintendo - be that the English one, the Japanese one, one of the localization teams in Europe, etc. - allowing us to acknowledge the difference as well by giving the two species different pages. Merges are the opposite: if two enemies look and act the same and have been given the same name by any sort of official Nintendo material, regardless of language, we can also say that they are the same. It's about context, logic and using all the resources at our disposal to provide the most accurate and well thought-out organization of material. Admittedly, not everyone agrees on what's "different" and what's "similar" (even Nintendo disagrees with itself), but that's why we have TPPs. The only problem is that people often dismiss the non-English sources, which is completely inappropriate: no one name is more important than any other - what matters is which one is most appropriate given the situation. And, while readers are obviously not expected to know all the translations and inferences we have made based on them, {{tem|main}} and redirects ensure that everyone gets to the info they're looking for, so the "this messes up navigation" arguments that crop up are also misguided. What ''would'' mess up navigation is using non-English evidence for some splits/merges, but ignoring them when voting on other pages: we have a standard established by numerous Proposals that have come before this one and we need to stick to it. - {{User:Walkazo/sig}} 12:44, 7 June 2011 (EDT)
| |
| | |
| @DKPetey99 if you'll notice all of those proposals were decided by foreign names {{User|Goomba's Shoe15}}
| |
| | |
| @DKPetey99, to answer your question in the votes section about why them having different Japanese names matters: Because they were created by the Japanese developers, not by NOA, and if they intended them to be considered the same species as regular Goombas, they would simply have given them the same name (and behavior). That NOA was too lazy to come up with an unique name to differentiate them from regular Goombas in the localized version of SMW is totally irrelevant. By your logic, Goomba's Shoe and Kuribu's Shoe are different items, as the power-up had different names in the different NOA translations of SMB3. - [[User:Ericss|Ericss]] 01:11, 8 June 2011 (EDT)
| |
| | |
| @Ericss: The Goombas in Super Mario World do so act the same way. They simply walk in a straight line and turn when they hit a wall, just like normal Goombas.
| |
| {{User:Tails777/sig}}

| Rather than a conjectural name, how about using the Japanese name from ''SMW'': '''Kuribon'''. Having "SMW" in the page name is indeed something to be avoided now that there's another appearance in the offing, and who knows, maybe they'll get an official English name with this reappearance, but in the meantime, {{tem|another language}} would still be preferable to {{tem|conjecture}}. To that end, I suggest adding "Kuribon" as a third voting option to this TPP. - {{User:Walkazo/sig}} 22:46, 17 June 2013 (EDT)

| [[Super Mario World]] is considered the first instance of this creature, since it is based on the appearance of the [[Goomba|Goombas]] in that game. | :Galoombas aren't based on the SMW Goombas. They're the same enemy, just now with a unique name. The paper enemies, and other unique paper entities from Paper Jam like Paper Mario and Paper Bowser, are considered to be new to Paper Jam, as there's no actual proof that it's those exact characters from the original Paper Mario games, where the paper was just a stylistic choice and as far as we know, that is ''the'' Mario, ''the'' Bowser, etc. and not some paper version from an alternate dimension. --{{User:Waluigi Time/sig}} 21:47, July 27, 2019 (EDT)

| | |
| One, Galoombas aren't based on Goombas in that game, they ''are'' the Goombas in that game. They were given a different name due to looking distinct from any other instance of Goomba in a Mario game. I'd hardly consider that "proof in the pudding". Secondly, Paper Mario isn't considered the first appearance for those enemies because the idea of Paper Mario as an alternate-universe counterpart - rather than just being "''the''" Mario as presented in a "paper" style like the rest of his world - wasn't made a thing until ''Paper Jam'', where the 'Paper' prefix distinguishes them from their "real" counterparts in that same game. Before that, no mention was made of alternate dimensions and what-not; you're probably still going off the faulty assumption that there must be some kind of continuous unbroken canon between all the games, which... no, there isn't. --{{User:Lord Grammaticus/sig}} 14:56, August 2, 2019 (EDT)
