One time I kinda messed his name up on paper Mario the first time and everything kills me. I almost messed it up on my paper Mario game a few game overs. ( barely enough space to spell Dimentio ) Dimentiofan25

I'm pretty sure that his name is pronounced "Dim-en-tee-oh", because when he introduced himself to Bowser, he responded with "Dimenti-WHO?"

Why would that matter?-Svtopdog

I don't think this little tidbit is true. As interesting as it would be, I've read through Garson and Carson's stories and I'm not really finding an implication of him writing that terrible book. Ultimate Mr. L (Talk) 21:40, 23 September 2016 (EDT)

At one point in the game, I believe when you make it to the top of the Dotwood Tree in Chapter 3-3, (though it may be right before the O'Chunks fight in Chapter 5-2) if you have Bowser out, he'll recognize Dimentio. This might be proof that it was Dimentio that sent Bowser and some of the Koopa Troop to the Bitlands. However, I don't want to add this to the article because I don't have the exact quote as a citation (like how Tippi's recognition of him right before fighting Fracktail has the quote of her directly implying she recognizes him). In the files there's a thing that acts like an enemy but looks like a dimension d cube. Maybe there was supposed to be a platforming dimension d segment? For other enemies search "Skawo unused enemy showcase super paper mario".-Svtopdog

On Tippi recognizing Dimentio
The corresponding line in Japanese has her simply affirming that Dimentio is one of the count's minions (ディメーン… 伯爵の…手下…). It could go either way whether she outright recognized him or not, given that this is right after he introduced himself. The localizers interpreted the line as certain recognition but that doesn't mean it was the original intent. --PaperSplash (talk) 15:54, August 21, 2020 (EDT)
Dimentio's design inspiration? (And the "dementia" thing)
The very first sentence of the first paragraph says, "Dimentio is the true main antagonist in Super Paper Mario. His name is a pun on "dementia" and "dimension"".
I've never understood this. Where does the "dementia" thing come from? Admittedly I haven't played the game all the way through myself, but even looking it up I haven't found an answer why, and if there's some sort of connection in the original Japanese version then it wasn't translated properly into the localization. The only possible connection I can think of is his use of the Floro sprouts, which I guess can sort of count. Dementia is the cognitive functions degrading, which can cause memory issues, bizarre thought and language patterns, etc, which you can sort of see how Mr. L and O'Chunks/O'Cabbage show some of that. But... really? Is that really what that's supposed to reference? Intuitively (at least, I think it is,) it feels more natural that his name is a pun on "demented" and "dimension." I will admit, that probably depends on your perspective on how his name is pronounced ("Di-men-ti-yo" or "Deh-men-ti-yo" fits the demented/dimension pun, but "Di-men-chi-yo" or "Deh-men-chi-yo" or even "Deh-men-chyo" does somewhat connect to the "dementia" thing, I guess?) I feel like I've gone on about this bit for too long but I'm just so genuinely confused as to how his name is supposed to pun on dementia.
As for his design, I have an idea as to what it references: Venetian masks, or specifically just the costumes in general. If you look up "venetian carnival masquerade mask" and check images for whatever search engine, you'll hopefully see exactly what pictures I'm talking about because they bear a VERY STRONG resemblance to Dimentio's outfit, and especially his face + hat shape. Some costume designs just look similar to Dimentio's entire design in general! Not to mention, Venice is in Italy, and Dimentio's word choice? "Ciao" isn't just Italian, THAT WORD CAME FROM VENETIAN SPECIFICALLY.
(I'm aware that Dimentio drops far more French phrases in the Japanese release than he does in the English, which DOES still have him say a few things in French. This puts a bit of a hole in my theory, admittedly. It's possible that his design references a different culture, or that he's referencing multiple instead of just one. I'm hoping to get a Japanese copy of SPM at some point to try and figure out what was first intended.)
I've said all of this so it can explain my suggestions: Change "... pun on "dementia"" to "... pun on "demented"". The trivia section is probably the best spot to mention his (potential) connection to Venetian carnivals, but for right now I can't think of a good way to word it, I've been typing this on-and-off for an hour. I invested way too much time getting mad about the dementia pun. --Scribblementio (talk) 03:06, August 5, 2023 (EDT)
addendum: Apparently in a Nintendo Power issue it's confirmed his name is indeed a pun on "dementia." I cannot find an archive of any issues released within a few months of SPM's release since that's the best bet to confirm, so I guess maybe its best to leave that bit alone until I or someone else finds the specific issue that says it. --Scribblementio (talk) 15:02, August 5, 2023 (EDT)
Name Pronunciation
Is it "Dim-en-tio" or "Dim-en-shio/chee-o". I like to pronounce it as the former, but I've seen some other people pronounce it as the latter. Which one is correct? 98.114.59.56 10:24, December 15, 2024 (EST)
