I doubt it, I've looked through my guidebook and nothing; Its probably another one of those unamed enemies, like [[Killer Tomato]]s or [[Mecha-Kritter]]. -- [[User: Sir Grodus|Sir Grodus]]

We promise to make this one simple (or at least, simple for our standards). [[Cheato]] redirects to Book, due to a claim added October 27th, 2014 that "Cheato" is their name in Japan. This is backed up by the presence of a character in Banjo Kazooie--a very similar-looking sentient book--also being named Cheato in English. However, 9 years on, and this claim is ''still'' uncited. The original edit that added this didn't include any references whatsoever, and in fact, in the time since [https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=Book&diff=next&oldid=1748902 the first edit that added this], a "Names in Other Languages" section was removed for lack of proper citationwork... yet, the redirect stands. What only serves to complicate matters is that [[Rip Cheato]] is a character in the first place, who is ''actually'' called Cheato.

So... Um... ''Are'' they called Cheato in Japan? Since the English site is the source of the original name, we figured we'd check the Japanese site in specific; and [https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_ndoj/index.html that's currently still up], so that's easy to check. Admittedly, our methodology as someone who doesn't speak Japanese basically amounted to "open every link and look for a book", and while there's a very real chance we missed a link somewhere, we couldn't find the Book anyways.

Until we can prove if this thing has ever been called Cheato in Japan, we have 3 real options here:
* '''Make "Cheato" redirect to "Rip Cheato":''' Odds are, an individual searching this name is looking for the character with Cheato as a last name.
* '''Delete "Cheato" as a redirect altogether:''' Exactly what it says on the tin. Obviously, if the name "Cheato" gets used for another character in the future--or if Cheato gets confirmed as a name for this thing--then we can remake this.

Just want to say that [[Rip Cheato]] is in the same game as [[Chet Rippo]], and I have often issues remembering these two "cleverly" named characters individually so I sometimes search "Cheato". {{User:Mario/sig}}

-:Admittedly, we are not particularly versed on the Deep Rareware Lore™ <s><small>(which when my sona is a monkey, that feels like the last descriptor of us)</small></s>, but we don't think that Rare has ever acknowledged these guys in the least. You could probably try and ask someone who was an ex-Rare employee on Twitter about it, but we get the feeling they either won't have an answer, or will be like "we just didn't think that hard about it." ...Though, the revelation that the only actual Japanese text that describes this thing literally is just, ''hon'', for "Book", makes this a pretty open-and-shut (hah) case that the Cheato name was probably some fabrication, unless they decide to have a conflicting name in another guidebook, and that name just so happens to be Cheato's Japanese name. ;P {{User:Camwoodstock/sig}} 12:51, December 9, 2023 (EST)
