Maybe Template:Censor might be good saying "Warning: This article contains swearing and/or adult content" or stuff like that. Yes, Snack is absolutuley right about the "This may be an encyclopedia, but it is an encyclopedia based on a series of KID-FRIENDLY games" thing. That's exactly what I've been trying to say. But this works to protect the quote to and more people like it... so I'm going to settle for this. I don't want to get into the argument again.

LOOK HERE, EVERYONE. This is the MARIOWIKI, not the HALO 3 WIKI. If this was a wiki based on, say, an "M" rated game like Bioshock, people would expect that we would have stuff like this and steer clear. But Mario games are ALWAYS rated E/E10+. There is a MUCH better chance that a young kid could be scarred by this than by going on the Wikipedia, or the Bioshock wikia. GET IT? We always have been a little different; we make our own rules here. OK? It's all right for an encyclopedia like ours to censor this stuff.

What about a new quote to replace the current one? I think the real issue is that having a quote, be it negative or not, outweighs not having one at all. However, the current quote is both outright negative and contains profanity. Surely there's something better to use? In fact, I've found several potential replacements that far better portray Hoskins and the film.

#MrConcreteDonkey Sigh, look at the reasons for opposing in the other 'Proposal' section. Per all those. Also, that first quote is terrible and has nothing to do with Mario. The second one is nothing special. Anyway, it's just a little bit of swearing. What harm will it do, most everyone has heard a swear word in their life, and this article is off the beaten track anyway.

#LeftyGreenMario Here we go again. Unfortunately, this is the best (and most controversial) quote we have from Bob Hoskins. Unless we have a better vote, or unless language changes, we would keep the quote. And besides, I suppose most young children are too naive to understand what that word is anyway.

#MC Hammer Bro. Ok, didn't Stooben Rooben settle this about a year ago with the idea of using ellipsis (...) avoid the word without actually censoring it? See my comment below for my solution example.

:Good idea FF65! I don't think that the fact that there was a husband-and-wife team matters to the Bob Hoskins article, and his ability to swear is not really something everyone needs to know; what we are trying to express is his negative opinion of the movie and that first sentence summarizes his opinion without the vulgar words. Marioguy1

::We actually did cut the quotation down in an attempt to please everyone, but that decision was forgotten after a few months (suggested in late 2008, overturned in mid-2009). So, we gave up on trying to compromise: no matter what we do, people will be unhappy, but as these proposals have shown, time and time again, leaving it uncensored angers the least amount of people, and so this is the way the article will remain. - 17:26, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

My Solution as I suggested above: Just like any English teacher will tell you, using (...) will still count as a direct quote.
My Solution:
"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers...The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set!"  User:MC Hammer Bro.
:That's what I was talking about when I said we tried cutting the quote down: in the end, it was reverted because the people bent on having the full thing still weren't happy. - 03:33, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree with MC Hammer Bro. We should use (...). User:Fba
Per MC Hammer Bro.
Why do we have to worry so much, who the heck is going to search for Bob Hoskins? 20:17, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
@MCD: Does it matter? Anyways, we don't need information on what happened in the movie because this is not an article on the movie, the subject at hand here is Bob Hoskins so we must have a quote that represents Bob Hoskins, not the Super Mario Bros. movie. I say we cut it down again and see how people react. Marioguy1
I Know This is the 5 millionth Complaint, but...
I seriously think we should AT LEAST censor the quote in this article. Think about it - this is a PUBLIC wiki, and almost EVERYONE has access to it. I mean, seriously people, would you want some kid coming on here and seeing this kind of stuff? 19:04, 23 March 2011 (EDT)
:No. - 00:02, 24 March 2011 (EDT)
:: This is a direct quote that Bob Hoskins said. Besides, if we start censoring direct quotes, before you know it, Chunky Kong will be "one He** of a guy". Wikipedia doesn't censor any of these words. From, Magikrazy51
I feel like ranting after reading all this....
First of all, the quote with the bad word is inappropiate, no questions asked. Wikipedia actually censors this quote in the SMB movie article by taking out the vulgar language and shortening it. If anyone wants to argue with that, I'll just tell you that this exact quote was one of the things that made me quit the MarioWiki a few months ago. Look how many kids have already gotten into this discussion and seen the quote.
Second of all, the argument that there are already bad things on this wiki is invalid. First of all, there are porn ads on this wiki, but that isn't acceptable, either. As they say, two wrongs don't make a right. In fact, we should get Porple to take these ads out of the wiki. Second of all, the SSB series actually isn't that bad. It's simply cartoon violence, which is acceptable. Blood and gore? Horror/terror? No. Third of all, if we censor this quote, yes, we will have to censor the DK Rap. Now find another article where we have to do that.
I say we should use only the "The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers." part. That might be disrespecting Bob Hoskins, but someone who says the f-word in almost every sentence he says deserves to be disrespected a little bit.

:Do we really have to have this conversation again first of all in order to find this article you have to do a lot of work to find a single quote second of all the f word translation is to  have sexual intercourse with so the word it self has no improper meaning and 3rd of all why do you care it's what the man said are you no longer allowed to express your self freely with out having someone censor what you have said it's ridiculous Goomba's Shoe15
::First of all, as I said, cutting out the bad language and shortening the quote would be better for this article. Second of all, although the f-word does mean that, Bob Hoskins meant it as a derogatory, offensive insult to the people who made the movie. Third of all, people wouldn't have to have their quotes censored if they can control themselves and not say a bad word. ThirdMarioBro: <span style="color:red">Mario,</span> <span style="color:green">Luigi,</span> <span style="color:blue">and me!</span> 18:16, 10 June 2011 (EDT)
:::Dude censoring is wrong in fact it's unconstitutional the constitution guarantees the right of freedom of speech and no matter what it's his opinion, also the whole it's derogatory towards the people who made the films is junk because otherwise we would have to take out all of the articles that contain negative reception cause is that not derogatory towards the people who made the games. Goomba's Shoe15
::::How is it not derogatory? Negative reception isn't derogatory because it doesn't necessarily have bad language. However, the f-word is practically the definition of derogatory. Secondly, "freedom of speech" still doesn't allow "hate speech" which is basically what Bob Hoskins said. ThirdMarioBro: <span style="color:red">Mario,</span> <span style="color:green">Luigi,</span> <span style="color:blue">and me!</span> 18:32, 10 June 2011 (EDT)
:::::the 1st amendment of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, freedom of expression, right to protest, and the right of privacy. That's why it's illegal to prosecute people who protest at funerals, that's why laws like the alien and Sedition acts were illegal because they censor people, and that's why its illegal to prosecute someone for burning and american flag. this is not hate speech this is a mans personal opinion and it is disrespectful to censor a man for saying what he feels Goomba's Shoe15
::::::Sure he can say what he wants but that doesn't mean we should put a quote with swearing in an article.
:::::::Why shouldnt we it's been said multiple times that this is an encyclopedia you don't censor an encyclopedia Goomba's Shoe15
::::::::Thank you, Goomba's Shoe. Censorship is what the Supreme Court would call "Unconstitutional" since it violates the 1st Amendment. And no, we cannot censor the DK Rap, ThirdMarioBro. We are a wiki, an encyclopedia for god sakes! Reference books can't censor! Check your dictionary or thesaurus. No, not the small one from when you were a kid, the BIG one! Is it censored? Didn't think so. Chances are you found all seven bad words, I did. Let's just end it now. No more censorship today, tomorrow, or ever. FREEDOM!!! Hurts my eyes like that Electric Soldier Porygon episode of Pokemon. Plus, if it's hidden by a template, why censor it? Having a seizure, The Magikjhfajflsfhajlvnas .
Here's a better revision of the show/hide revision of the quote.  The background is changed to yellow to make it easier on people's eyes, and I used the term "foul", instead of "swear".  Anyway, the Super Mario Wiki is child-friendly, so not hiding this quote would be going against that policy.

<br clear=all>
No, we are NOT censoring the quote. Not with asterisks, not by shortening it, not by replacing it, and certainly not with a garish template. Our mandate us not to protect children, but to provide everyone with all the information we possible can in an efficient and professional manner. It's not nudity or gore, it's a word, and it's not against policy AT ALL. Users aren't allowed to swear at each other, since that's flaming, but that's not the case here. If any policy page says we can't have profanity in quotations in our articles, then it's outdated and wrong. Every discussion and proposal trying to get rid of the profanity has failed, and they will continue to fail: the community has spoken, repeatedly. The quotation and all it's profanity is staying: live with it. - 21:44, 12 August 2011 (EDT)
I merely ran into this article while patrolling edits.  I did find it odd that the article displayed foul words, since most places that I go to don't tolerate such words.  And after all this time, I thought we were all about being child-friendly.  Boy am I a sucker. 22:03, 12 August 2011 (EDT)
I realized something. What kind of kid would look up Bob Hoskins? Even if they were unlucky enough to stumble across this movie, kids don't pay attenion to the scrollin' credits! They just call him Mario or Eddie Valiant. Magikrazy51
I know a wiki with a swearing template (the HR wiki), but allusions to swearing are so common in Homestar Runner, it has its own article as opposed to ONE instance in ONE obscure article that no kid would look up as explained by my above statement. If the Mario world had swearing or allusions to it, I'd suggest a template, but instead I say "No thanks, officer. Iv'e got one big round one". Magikrazy51
Actually, I found this article with the categories and I'm 9. Paper Mario Kart
Image
It's funny how the image for Hoskins in the role of Mario is from a deleted scene, rather than another, more relevant, sequence. 04:51, 1 August 2011 (EDT) Redstar
:Nifty. And handy: if it's not exactly from the film, it's not just some old picture of Mario that we're repurposing - it's a unique image that shows Hoskins as Mario. - 00:56, 5 August 2011 (EDT)

I would like to remove the portion of the article that suggests that Hoskins' only discovered what Super Mario Bros. is when his son told him. However, I keep being reverted for no reason. ::::Words are not scary. They're words. We're not going to compromise the integrity of the wiki to "protect" people from ultimately harmless assemblages of letters, and sections like this are nothing but a waste of time. - 20:27, 23 March 2012 (EDT)
:::::Although I disagree about Walkazo with how "scary" the vulgar words are (there's a reason they're usually not used in any formal conversations and why many schools frown upon it when kids say it out loud), we are against censoring and that's <u>final</u>. We have tons of discussions regarding this and all are resolved. We have our reasons for censoring these words. Valid reasons. End of story.

Not sure if this is something we want to consider adding to the article or not, but Bob Hoskins stated today that he has been diagnosed with Parkinsons disease and will be retiring from acting. == the quote ==
No, this isn't about censoring it.
I think it needs to be shortened. The quote takes up as much space as the actual information about him. It's pretty ridiculous. I think this would be a suitable shortening.
"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a fuckin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare."
Anyone else agree or is the length fine? Magikrazy
:I'd rather see the article lengthened rather than chopping out some of the scarce, interesting content in the name of balance balance: that's kinda going the opposite direction from improving the page. - 15:27, 10 December 2015 (EST)
::I think two aspects of quotes are this, by priority: if they illustrate the character and if they're succinct. But I do think the article needs an expansion first as well, and the quote also includes its why as well, which really isn't explained in this article. 15:40, 10 December 2015 (EST)
Well yeah, expanding is normally preferred, but when I posted this, I figured there wasn't much more to add. Now that I think about it, that's not true. Magikrazy
Change the quote
Okay, I get it. I know we can't censor the quote but can we at least change it? Because like what if a kid like around 3-10 sees that and they've never heard the word before. Could we at least change it to some other quote that doesn't have swearing because I am a little concerned for that because kids are on this site too. So is it okay to change it? 05:08, 21 August 2016 (EDT)
