:That's the blue Spiny Shell, which has existed since Mario Kart 64. It's already listed in a hatnote on this article. 22:32, October 31, 2020 (EDT)

Split Blue Shell and Blue Shell (Mario Strikers)
Settled TPP
failed
They are fundamentally entirely different items. They also look very different.
Proposer: Shyguy85<br>

Support
#Shyguy85 Per proposal.
#SeanWheeler Why does the Mario Kart item have a separate page?
Oppose
#DryBonesBandit Saying they look "very different" only applies to Mario Strikers Charged, where they look icy, so the "difference in appearance" argument doesn't really make sense. Besides, they have different abilities in literally every game they appear in not counting remakes, so this proposal's arguments are not strong enough in my opinion to warrant a split.
#Super Mario RPG These are Blue Koopa Shells featured in different contexts.
#Tails777 I was about to support on the grounds that two games treat it as a power-up and one as a weapon, but then I remembered that the Fire Flower is basically the same thing, just without a slight visual change.
#Waluigi Time Per all.
#Mario There's likely plenty of other items with shared appearances and different functions (Spiny Shell). Blue Shells only got really an appearance change in Mario Strikers Charged, the sequel of the game that provided Blue Shells that do the same thing, but look more like standard blue shells.
#ThePowerPlayer The Blue Shell from Mario Strikers Charged is still a blue shell, is referred to as such by the game, and looks identical aside from the shell texture.
#FanOfRosalina2007 Per all.
#PaperSplash Per all.
#Pizza Master Though the Blue Shells of NSMB 1 and Strikers 1 function differently, they look the same in both games and are likely the same item. This would be like splitting Ice Flower and Ice Flower (Super Mario Galaxy).
#Sparks Per all.
Comments
Let's look at every appearance of this Blue Shell item and see how different they are:
*Super Mario World - Worn by Koopas and used by Mario the exact same way as any other Koopa Shell; but if any Yoshi puts it into its mouth, it can fly, much like after a Blue Yoshi puts a Green Shell in its mouth.
*Super Mario Strikers/Mario Strikers Charged - Thrown like any other Shell in the game; can freeze targets.
*New Super Mario Bros./Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Transforms Mario into Shell Mario (the ONLY time a Blue Shell doesn't work like any other Koopa Shell in the game); it allows him to shell dash, but he cannot kick the shell away like other Koopa Shells.
*Super Mario Galaxy - Visual-only difference; when Cosmic Mario picks up a Koopa Shell, it turns blue. Otherwise, it's just a regular Koopa Shell (worn by Koopas and can be thrown but also allows for better and more precise underwater movement)
*Super Mario 3D World - Visual-only difference; when Toad enters an empty Koopa Shell, it turns blue, much like how it'll turn red if Mario enters it, pink if Peach enters it, or cyan if Rosalina enters it. Otherwise, it's just a regular Koopa Shell (Worn by Koopas and can be thrown but also allows players to enter it and shell dash)
This tells me that a Blue Shell's effect varies between games and is not just a Strikers quirk. Most of the Blue Shells do share the commonality of working just like any other color Koopa Shell in their respective games but with an additional effect... but so does the Blue Shell in Strikers so that doesn't make it distinct enough to warrant a split. In fact, I feel like the New Super Mario Bros. one actually warrants a split MORE than the Strikers one purely because you cannot kick it away like any other Koopa Shell in that game, making it actually more different from the other shells of that game than any other Blue Shells of their respective games... but then again, its ability, the shell slide, is precisely what you expect from a Koopa Shell anyway, and that very same ability is given to any player carrying ANY Koopa Shell in Super Mario 3D World (where Blue Shells only are a thing because they needed to color-code a Blue Shell worn by Toad), making it STILL not distinct enough to warrant a split.<br>As for visuals, almost all of them look nearly identical, looking just like any other Koopa Shell but in a blue hue instead of green or red; it's the exact same blue hue across all of these. Strikers Charged is the only time they actually don't share that look, being cyan and frosted instead. But it works exactly the same as in Super Mario Strikers, in which they do still look exactly the same as any other Blue Shell, so I don't think this one appearance change warrants a split. It's like splitting the Super Mario World Fire Flower because they turned into tulips there for some reason.<br>Ergo, it doesn't really warrant splitting. It's all varied effects that have SOMETHING in common aside from the color, and the one time it actually looks different is also from a sequel of a game in which it has the same effect (meaning it's intended to be the same item) and yet looks EXACTLY THE SAME as the other Blue Shells anyway.<br>So, in conclusion:

Strikers Blue Shell Artwork.png|alt=Blue Shell in Super Mario Strikers|...is intended to be the same thing as this...
NSMB Blueshell.png|alt=Blue Shell in New Super Mario Bros.|...which looks identical and is likely the same thing as THIS...

:If they are similar enough but with different functions, why not merge the Spiny Shell (blue) into this article? Everyone calls the Mario Kart item a Blue Shell and it's another blue Koopa shell. Only difference is the spikes and wings. ::That ain't a Koopa Troopa's shell, that's a Spiny's shell. It doesn't matter what "everyone" calls it. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:36, August 30, 2024 (EDT)
:::It's been pretty much called Spiny Shell consistently as possible despite common lexicon misnaming this item as "blue shell". I am also one of the few people who calls that thing a Spiny Shell. 19:41, August 30, 2024 (EDT)
