The article is talking about the FDS release of the game, the online game you've played is most-likely a hack of the original to resemble the FDS version, thus the Mushroom Retainers are left the same. Anyway, here are the sprites:

I recently played the FDS (real) version, I did the minus world glitch method, and when I entered the 1st pipe, I was teleported to the ground to the left of the normal exit pipe, meaning the glitch is in a way fixed.

==Retool of the Lost Levels==
The current article says this game is a retool of SMB1, but I'll argue that it is a retool of the Lost Levels with mostly VS levels reconstructed for it. The physics are TLL, almost all the graphics are TLL, the Mario or Luigi game mode as opposed to a 2-player mode, the A-D Worlds that can only be accessed after beating it 8 times, there are Super Springs, etc. They took TLL and grafted SMB1/VS levels while removing wind and poison mushrooms.--[[User:Platform|Platform]] ([[User talk:Platform|talk]]) 17:23, January 19, 2021 (EST)

Mushroom Platforms are reskinned as cloud platforms in TLL, it wouldn't be too difficult for them to restore the mushroom paltforms. None of ANN's levels are the same as VS levels though there are some similarities.
