| How do those sound even remotely similar? I suppose a recurring extremely fast percussive riff sounds ultra-tenuously like it, with some notes at the end scrambled and not including the full thing, but that's a major leap there. | They don't have to be 100% exactly the same but they are obviously similar. 20:45, February 19, 2020 (EST) | | They don't have to be 100% exactly the same but they are obviously similar. 20:45, February 19, 2020 (EST) |
| :The MK7 one speeds up midway through after a rest and is a different sequence of notes? Similar, yes, enough to be considered objectively a reference, no. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:51, February 19, 2020 (EST)

| ::Then would you say that this track isn't a reference to the SMB overworld theme just because it has a different tempo? 20:54, February 19, 2020 (EST)

| :::That has seven notes sound close enough it could be considered a starting point, and is a theme that's been arranged so much already anyways interpreting it's gonna allow for a bit looser standard. | ::I already said they don't have to be exactly the same to be considered a reference. And you're ignoring the fact that the course literally has a pirate theme and Bull Wario. 20:56, February 19, 2020 (EST)
| |
| :::No, I'm not. "Wario in a Viking Helmet" is far more likely a reference (even if it's the wrong color compared to his art iirc), though I really don't think that if I had to deliberately listen for it for 5 minutes to notice it that it's similar enough in composition or execution. | :guy that does music for a partial living here. Are there four notes appegiating downwards in a similar fashion? Yes, yes there are. Would I say that this is necessarily distinguished enough to be a motif repeated? No, I would lean towards the side of coincidence. However, what sells me on this being intentional is the notes immediately following it. While the notes are descending in a G major chord, the second part moves to this funky G phrygian using an Ab and Bb instead. The rhythms between the horns in shipyard and the main theme on gb are different, however the main melody is still there. I assure to you that this is in fact a reference. | ::OK, I guess I can go with that. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:25, February 19, 2020 (EST)

| :::I even literally said the eight notes (the first four and the notes following them). 21:47, February 19, 2020 (EST)

| ::::I know, but I couldn't pick up on the similarity until Trig went into detail. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:25, February 19, 2020 (EST)
