Mario is bravely approaching a swarm of Snifits that bombards him with their pellets, only to be shocked in seeing Mario uninjured by their attack, revealing his new invincible form: Metal Mario. Right then, Toad wakes Mario from his afternoon nap so that he can continue the search for the Power Stars and Peach. As Mario puts away the futon, he tells Toad his dream, and he reveals that the Metal form is actually real: they just need to activate its Cap Switch located in the Hazy Maze Cave, which can be reached through a painting in the basement.
The two depart for Hazy Maze Cave, and following Toad's direction, they arrive at an underground lake with a lift. From the water, a monster emerges, scaring Toad, but his sudden yell, also scares the monster, that presents itself as Dorrie. Toad asks it if it knows the location of the Cap Switch, and it answers that it is just on the other side of the lake, it even offers them to ride on its back to cross the lake. After numerous bumps on the rocks, Dorrie reaches the other shore, where it drops Mario and Toad. Like this, the two arrives at the Cavern of the Metal Cap, where they spot the Cap Switch.
A bunch of Snifits appears, riddling Mario with pellets and draining his Power Meter. A pellet in the bottom sends Mario straight into the switch, activating it and filling all the semi-visible blocks in green blocks, scaring the Snifits. Mario hits one and gets the Metal Cap, turning into Metal Mario. Now impervious to their pellets, a Snifit takes the water from the nearby river and spits it onto Metal Mario, rusting him and immobilizing him. As the Snifit prepares to empty Mario's Power Meter for good, Dorrie, in its continuous bumping against rocks and walls, crashes its head inside the Metal Cap course.
Mario asks it for help and Dorrie eats him. With its tongue, he manages to remove the rust, but spits him out in the form of a disk. Dorrie has then the idea of tossing "Medal Mario" like a frisbee against the Snifits, defeating them. The chapter ends with Dorrie taking Mario and Toad back to shore, by the lift, departing ways. As Metal Mario already fantasies on the heroic actions he will take with this new form, the lift doesn't budge due to his weight, forcing him to wear it off.
