When Mario acquires the Sun Incense from the front desk at the Snif City hotel, he places it onto the bowl of sand. Doing so ends up summoning the Mega Paper Macho Pokey, which pulls our heroes (and the Boot Car) into a sandstorm. Mario ends up defeating the Pokey, which explodes into confetti, releasing the renowned archaeologist Professor Toad, who had been swallowed by the creature. The professor looks at the altar, and he deduces that the ritual was performed correctly. Olivia is thrilled that she and Mario have found someone who can decipher the Ancient Ones' writing.

The ritual is completed when the sun is returned to the sky after destroying the yellow streamer, causing the altar floor to shift and reveal a hidden staircase. This leads to a chamber where King Shroomses had Captain T. Ode kept frozen in a block of ice prior to the events of the game. After thawing out the captain using the Fire Vellumental's power, Mario and Olivia can follow him to his Super Marino in the Musée Champignon.
The ritual is completed when the sun is returned to the sky after destroying the yellow streamer, causing the sun spikes on the altar floor to move outward and the central platform to lower, revealing a staircase. This leads to a chamber where Captain T. Ode has been kept frozen in a block of ice. After rescuing him using the Fire Vellumental's power, Mario and Olivia can follow the captain back to his Super Marino in the Musée Champignon.
