Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese for "January River") appears in the Super Mario franchise as a city located in wikipedia, located in South America; this is consistent with its portrayal in real life.

Mario is Missing!
Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese for "January River") is the second largest city of Brazil, located in South America. Along with New York City, Tokyo, Cairo and London, it is one of the cities Luigi has to visit in Mario is Missing!.

Rio de Janeiro's first appearance in the Super Mario franchise is as one of the cities Luigi has to visit in the PC and SNES versions of Mario is Missing!. As with all the other cities appearing in the game, Rio de Janeiro was invaded by Koopa Troopas sent by Bowser to steal artifacts from the cities' landmarks. Luigi's task is to rescue the city by finding and returning all the missing artifacts.

In the SNES version, the Koopas steal a spotlight from the Christ the Redeemer Statue, a seashell from Copacabana Beach, and a cable car from Sugar Loaf Mountain.
As with all the other cities appearing in the game, Rio de Janeiro was invaded by Koopa Troopas. The enemies were sent by Bowser to steal artifacts from the cities' landmarks. In Rio, the Troopas stole from the Christ the Redeemer Statue, the Copacabana Beach, and the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Luigi's task was to rescue the city by finding and returning all the missing artifacts. In this location has a poster saying Out Collor.

In the PC version, instead of stealing from the Christ the Redeemer Statue, the Koopas instead steal a headdress from the Carnival, and a Soccer Ball from Maracana Stadium. Additionally, in this version, the mayor of the city is shown to be Mayor Cook.
Rio is also to be the general setting for Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, since the city is slated to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.br

The information from Mario is Missing! mistakenly places the city to be above the Tropic of Cancer, when Rio is actually above the Tropic of Capricorn.
