The Pure Hearts are powerful artifacts created by the Tribe of Ancients in Super Paper Mario. All eight Pure Hearts are pieces of the Purity Heart, and they were created by the Ancients using the power of love, which was believed to be the only force powerful enough to save all worlds from destruction.
The Pure Hearts are eight sacred artifacts created by the Tribe of Ancients to save the world from the Chaos Heart. The Pure Hearts seem to be <i>Super Paper Mario</i>'s equivalent of <i>Paper Mario</i>'s Star Spirits and <i>Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door</i>'s Crystal Stars. They appear as large, heart-shaped gems with rounded edges, and are collected in the order of colors as they would appear on a rainbow (save the final Pure Heart, which is white; the result of all colors being mixed together).

The Pure Hearts were created as part of the prophecies detailed in the Light Prognosticus, which state that four Heroes of Light must gather all eight of them in order to counteract the Chaos Heart and defeat the one who wields it. When placed in a Heart Pillar, each Pure Heart leads to a dimension where the next one is located, through a series of doors at the top of Flipside Tower. The Pure Hearts are eight pieces of the whole Purity Heart, which was divided into the Pure Hearts by the Ancients so it could be hidden across different dimensions.
Mario receives a Pure Heart from Merlon before the player even controls him in the beginning of the game, and must find the other seven throughout his adventure to form the Purity Heart. After acquiring a Pure Heart, Mario must take it to a Heart Pillar and insert it into a shaped indentation. This creates a door to a new world atop Flipside Tower, with the color of the door matching the Pure Heart used to create it. The only exception is the white Pure Heart, which causes the large black door to Castle Bleck to appear atop Flopside Tower.

The first Pure Heart is held by a descendant of the Ancients named Merlon, who gives it to Mario, the first of the four heroes, with the task of traveling through dimensions in order to gather the other seven and stop Count Bleck from destroying all worlds using The Void. (If Mario refuses to accept this Pure Heart, this results in a Game Over.) During his journey, Mario eventually comes to reunite with Princess Peach, Bowser, and Luigi, all of whom are proven to be the remaining three Heroes of Light, and together, the four of them manage to collect all eight Pure Hearts and travel to Castle Bleck to battle against Count Bleck, the holder of the Chaos Heart.

According to Carson, the Pure Hearts are powered by love (parental, romantic, etc.). The Ancients researched love, believing it to be the universe's only salvation; the Pure Hearts are thus the physical embodiment of love. It was written in the Light Prognosticus that a group of heroes must find all of the Pure Hearts to destroy the Chaos Heart and save all worlds from annihilation.

Despite the immense power of the Pure Hearts, they are not indestructible, and can be weakened--for example, the Violet Pure Heart was turned to stone upon being consumed by The Void along with the rest of Sammer's Kingdom. It was revitalized by Queen Jaydes of The Underwhere, using her power over life and death. In addition, the power of the Pure Hearts is depleted after they are used to break through the Chaos Heart's protection over Count Bleck, though they are all revitalized by Bleck's minions.
Despite their incredible power, the Pure Hearts are not indestructible. If a dimension collapses while a Pure Heart is in it, the artifact loses most of its power, becoming a large, heart-shaped stone. It can only be repowered by an extremely powerful entity, but suffers no loss of potency when the act is complete.

At the end of the game, Dimentio, having stolen the Chaos Heart for himself, uses the last of his power to sustain the Chaos Heart long enough to ensure the destruction of every world. In their final moments, Count Bleck and Tippi--now revealed to be long-lost lovers Lord Blumiere and Lady Timpani--reaffirm their love for each other, sacrificing themselves in order to save all worlds; their vows manage to unite the Pure Hearts into the whole Purity Heart, destroying the Chaos Heart and reversing the prophecy of destruction.
It was also believed that the Pure Hearts would disappear forever if used together against the Chaos Heart's power. This became a major factor in Dimentio's plan to remake the universe; by tricking the heroes into "wasting" the Pure Hearts against Count Bleck, he would be able to take control of the Chaos Heart and The Void. However, it is revealed that the Pure Hearts can be recreated by powerful feelings of love, which spells the end of Dimentio's schemes and allows Count Bleck and Tippi - now revealed as Lord Blumiere and Lady Timpani - to finally destroy the Chaos Heart.

The following is a list of the eight Pure Hearts, as well as their locations and the source of love they were likely attracted to:
#Red: Kept by Merlon in Flipside, may represent his status as a caregiver to Tippi.
#Orange Guarded by Fracktail deep within the Yold Ruins in Lineland. Fracktail was prepared to hand over the Pure Heart without a fight, but he went berserk after being short-circuited by Dimentio. After Mario destroyed the malfunctioning machine, the Pure Heart was given to him by Merlumina. It is unknown what attracted the Pure Heart to her.
#Yellow: Kept by Merlee in Gloam Valley. It may be a symbol of faith.
#Green: Emerged in the Bitlands's Fort Francis after Mario rescues Tippi. It was freed from its seal by the trust and friendship she had developed with Mario and his friends.
#Blue: Entrusted to Squirpina XIV, queen of Squirpia, and hidden in the Whoa Zone until her son, Squirps, led the heroes to it. Possibly represents his love for his mother.
#Indigo: Kept by the Floro Sapien kings in the Land of the Cragnons. Likely drawn to King Croacus's implied love for his people.
#Purple: Kept by King Sammer in Sammer's Kingdom. May stand for the love that bloomed between the first King Sammer and the sister of Merlumina, who brought the Pure Heart to him to protect.
#White: Personified as a Nimbi named Luvbi. Her foster parents are Grambi of the Overthere and Queen Jaydes of the Underwhere. After the battle against Bonechill, the heart was restored to its true form. Was likely attracted by the love they gave to it as their daughter.

The eight Pure Hearts, as well as their locations and keepers, are listed below.
All Pure Hearts are drawn by their own power toward those strong with love, likely due to their aforementioned love-powered creation. They lead the player to the next one, with the exception of the eighth one, which leads the player to Castle Bleck. Pure Hearts may be sapient, as the Luvbi character spoken of above actually managed to remember being a Pure Heart when her true being as a Pure Heart was revealed to her after a prolonged amount of time in which she thought she was born a Nimbi.

Trivia
*The Pure Heart Mario obtains from Sammer's Kingdom is meant to be purple; however, after it is restored by Queen Jaydes, it is erroneously shown as being indigo.
*When a Pure Heart is obtained, smaller hearts based on the number of Pure Hearts obtained appear and move in time with the Pixls dancing.
* In the Japanese version of the script, the Purity Heart is simply called the Pure Heart, creating ambiguity between the whole Purity Heart and its fragments.
