A '''palette swap''', also known as a '''color swap''', '''alternate palette''', and '''alternate color''',{{ref needed}} appears in the [[Super Mario (franchise)|''Super Mario'' franchise]] as a form of changing the colors of the player characters. This is often employed to differentiate multiple players playing as the same character, or simply for cosmetic effect. [[Luigi]] was originally a palette swap of [[Mario]] and was portrayed as such in-game for several early games, including ''[[Mario Bros. (game)|Mario Bros.]]'', ''[[Wrecking Crew]]'', ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'', ''[[Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels]]'', ''[[Golf: Japan Course]]'', ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'', and ''[[Super Mario World]]'', but afterwards began being consistently given a different appearance outside of certain games that re-use sprites from the aforementioned ones.

Note that in technical terms, "true" palette swaps are only applicable to early 2D games where a sprite's color-mapping data and the palette data are separately stored and combined to make the graphics appear on the screen; in 3D games, the equivalent is swapping textures or vertex colors, while more advanced 2D games often store all of the sprites of each color separately in the data rather than apply different predefined palettes to the uncolored sprites. However, the phrase "palette swap" is still commonly used as an umbrella term for all color swaps.

Palette swaps were technically introduced in ''[[Mario Bros. (game)|Mario Bros.]]'', since [[Luigi]] looks identically to [[Mario]], but is controlled by the second player. 

The [[Mario Bros. (Game Boy Advance)|Game Boy Advance version of ''Mario Bros.'']] available in the ''[[Super Mario Advance (series)|Super Mario Advance]]'' series features multiple colored versions of Mario as players 2, 3 and 4. Player 2 wears a green hat and purple overalls (identical to Luigi's Super Mario Advance palette), player 3 wears a yellow hat and tan overalls, and player 4 wears a blue hat and tan overalls. Duplicate characters on the same team are marked with a light and a dark tint. Yoshi's dark-blue and pink colors are not playable but can only be seen when the player faces the Yoshi Team in Classic Mode. In ''[[Super Mario Run]]'', the version 2.0.0 update adds four characters, all of which are different colored Yoshis to complement Yoshi. While their emblems are different, the color of the [[Goal Pole]] and [[Checkpoint Flag]] remains orange like Yoshi despite how their shoes are not orange. All Yoshis, including the original green one, have a special effect based on color: In the Toad Rally mode, [[Toad (species)|Toad]]s that appear to cheer for them are more likely to be match the color of the Yoshi. This change in probability allows for Toads of colors that do not normally appear in a given course to appear. In the game, each Yoshi is a separate character to select, all of which with separate artwork. However, in the Remix 10 mode, only one course per Area can make the player play as a Yoshi of any color. The game's website displays all five Yoshi characters in one window.
