It was announced in a [[nwiki:Nintendo Direct|Nintendo Direct]] on September 23, 2021,<ref name=Direct/> and was released in the Americas on October 25, 2021, and elsewhere on October 26, 2021.

Games that supported the Rumble Pak on the Nintendo 64 have rumble support in this application, for instance in ''[[Mario Party 3]]'', in contrast to on Virtual Console for [[Wii]] or [[Wii U]]. There is however no [[Transfer Pak]] or Controller Pak support for games that originally supported them.

==Button mapping==
If a Nintendo 64 controller for the Nintendo Switch is connected, the main menu's sound effects are replaced by those from ''[[Super Mario 64]]''. Unlike the other applications, the rewind feature is not available in this application.
