| The Mushroom World is an area with eight countries in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Mushroom Kingdom serves as a gateway to these lands. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Bowser's Koopalings have taken over the other seven kingdoms of the Mushroom World. They stole the Magic Wands of the kings of each domain and transformed them into various creatures. While Mario and Luigi eventually defeat them and restore the kings to normal, Bowser himself returns to the Mushroom Kingdom in their absence and kidnaps Princess Peach once again. He is later thwarted in his own territory.

| While the Mushroom World originally seemed to exclude the Mushroom Kingdom, later uses of the term apparently count Princess Peach's sovereignty as well. In Yoshi's Safari, it is stated during the ending that Mario and Yoshi departed from Jewelry Land to return to the Mushroom World, where the princess awaits them. Furthermore, "Mushroom World" is sometimes used to refer to the Mushroom Kingdom in Paper Mario; the kingdom went under that name in the original Japanese script, but the English localization substituted most instances with the more common Mushroom Kingdom to fit the context. Similarly, the Japanese version of the SNES manual of Super Mario World uses "Mushroom World" to refer to Mario, Luigi, and Peach's homeland in a direct reference to Super Mario Bros. 3, which was changed to "Mushroom Kingdom" in the official English localization.
| | Mushroom World is the name of the world Mario and his friends live on. It is the setting of many games in the Mario series and sub-series. The Mushroom Kingdom, Star Haven, as well as all the lands featured in Super Mario Bros. 3, are all a part of this Mushroom World. The Mushroom Kingdom is considered to be the "gateway" to the greater Mushroom World. As such, other lands that are associated with the Mushroom Kingdom also exist on Mushroom World, such as the Beanbean Kingdom, Sarasaland, Dinosaur Land, and Yoshi's Island. However, games and places less associated with the Mushroom Kingdom (and the main Mario series itself) are harder to place. It is sensible to believe that places visited in the Donkey Kong and WarioWare series are a part of Mushroom World, as characters from these locations often appear in the Mushroom Kingdom for kart races and sports events. However, it is possible these places exist in different worlds, as they are not explicitly linked to the Mushroom Kingdom. As such, some places are only inferred to be part of Mushroom World, as they are not associated with the Mushroom Kingdom, but characters from those places are associated with Mario himself. In either case, characters are able to travel between these distinct areas, even if they exist in different worlds. |

| ===Super Mario Bros. 3===
| |
| In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Mushroom World is divided into eight lands, seven of them with individual kings that were usurped by the seven Koopalings, and the eighth land, Dark Land, being Bowser's home domain and the location of his castle. The Warp Zone is considered World 9 in the game, but it is not confirmed to be an official part of the Mushroom World. Likewise, it is unknown where World-e is located.

| The back of the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Volume 1 DVD box mentions that Mario and Luigi had been transported into the Mushroom World from Brooklyn. However, as shown on other home video release boxes, this was mistaken for the Mushroom Kingdom, which is also alternatively referred to as "Mushroomland" in the cartoon itself and related comic series. | | Mushroom World is orbited by a vast chain of small planetoids, as seen in Super Mario Galaxy. This could possibly indicate a ring system, though this is unlikely. Mario appears to be able to breathe normally despite the lack of oxygen in this game, though in others he cannot. This may be due to the presence of a Luma in his hat. |

| | == Is Mushroom World actually Earth? == |
|
| |
|
| ===The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3===
| | Mushroom World is considered to be a distinct entity from the Earth, as the geography and history of the two worlds are completely different. In games where the Earth is explicitly represented, such as Mario's Time Machine and Mario is Missing!, the Earth resembles the Earth we actually live on. We share this video game Earth's history, as well as its environments and other traits. Features of Mushroom World, such as the invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom by Bowser, or giant mushrooms growing to the size of trees, do not exist in games where Earth is represented. However, it is possible Mushroom World is an alternate version of Earth, given the similarities between the two. This is explicitly stated in the anime film The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach, Super Mario cartoons, Nintendo Adventure Books and Super Mario Bros. film. In these mediums, characters are able to travel between the two versions of Earth through dimensional gateways. However, this does not mean Mushroom World is Earth, just its equivalent in an alternate dimension. |
| The Mushroom World is the main setting in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

| | These lands are thought to exist in the same world as Mario's, given that characters such as Wario and DK appear in games with Mario. However, these lands are not explicitly associated with the Mushroom Kingdom. As such, it is possible these lands exist in a different world. |
