Butterflies are enemies that appear in Donkey Kong 3, being one of the most difficult foes. They appear starting from round 24 (15 in the NES version) and move in random patterns, swooping down on Stanley or taking his flowers. They can also toss spears like Buzzbees and Beespies. In the arcade version, if a Butterfly feeds a flower to Donkey Kong it becomes a Super Bee.
In Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushū, Butterflies fly in groups that reach the bottom of the screen. Only one formation of Butterflies may exist at a time. Butterflies move very quickly, moving even faster than Super Bees, though unlike Super Bees, they do not fire projectiles at Stanley. They make their first appearance On the Ground Picture, the sixteenth stage. They take one hit to defeat, and give 30 points.
