Hexes are items introduced in Mario Party DS. Hexes can be used to place traps on spaces before rolling the Dice Block, in a similar vein to Character Spaces from previous Mario Party titles. Hexes can be placed on any Blue Space or Red Space within five spaces ahead or behind the player. Only the Hex placer can see what type of hex is set; other players see a character emblem laid over the space. These items cannot be bought and must be obtained by passing through a Hex Area, or stolen from opponents using a Snag Bag. Hexes are stored in the same inventory as normal items, so a maximum of three Hexes can be carried at a time. After a player lands on a Hex and undergoes its effect, it is erased.

When a player lands on their own Hex, most will grant the player five coins and erase themselves. Alternatively, when a player lands on their own Star Block Hex or Coin Block Hex, they will still be able to collect stars and coins respectively.
These types of items are similar to most of the Capsules that came from Mario Party 5 through Mario Party 7. Hexes can be obtained by simply passing through a Hex Area; different types of Hexes may vary during gameplay. Players can carry three Hexes and normal items at that time. The players can use it to place them on spaces and set up as traps before the player proceeds to hit the Dice Block. Hexes can be only placed on Blue and Red Spaces during in the gameboard within five spaces from the player's current position.

In Super Mario Party Jamboree, there is a set of landmine-like items that function similarly to the Hexes.
When a player lands on their own Hex the player placed earlier, the player gains five Coins instead of executing the trap itself; and then it disappears. In addition, when the player places a Hex on a previous player's Hex in the gameboard, the previous player's Hex is removed from the board as the player's new Hex takes place.

Trivia
*The name "Hex" refers to both its hexagonal design and its ability to "curse" spaces.
*Setting off a purple Hex will cause it to grow large and flatten the victim, with exceptions to the 1-Star Hex and 2-Star Hex, which will fold vertically inward to squish them.
