The object is to bounce a [[Soccer Ball|soccer ball]] on [[Mario]]'s head for as long as possible. He can be moved around the screen with the left and right arrow keys. Often, character icons appear in random locations above Mario and can be collected by bouncing the ball into them to obtain points for a score. [[Mushroom]]s and [[Blue Shell]]s also spawn regularly and can be collected with Mario to change his speed temporarily: Mushrooms speed him up, while Blue Shells cause him to slow down. The item that is currently taking effect is displayed on the top-left corner of the screen.
