Plot synopsis[edit]

In Mario Brothers Plumbing, While shining his shoes in the apartment, Luigi is approached by Mario, who is asking where his boxer shorts are. Luigi proceeds to unravel the rag he was shining his shoes with, revealing them to be Mario's shorts. Mario, unphased by the fact that his shorts were being used to scrub shoes, simply sets them on a table. Suddenly, the radio announces that all the "plumbers and plumbettes" should be ready for the upcoming ball.

Remembering the ball, Mario goes to change into his rabbit costume while Luigi goes to change into his gorilla costume, which he accidentally left in his truck. While Mario and Luigi are gone, a news broadcast about an escaped gorilla from the "Ding-a-Ling Bros. Circus" is played, warning citizens to look-out.

After changing into his costume, Mario exits his room and begins looking for Luigi. Suddenly, a gorilla bursts through the door and begins to destroy various objects. Mario, believing the gorilla to be Luigi in his costume, starts asking why he is wrecking the place and starts calling his "costume" unattractive. The gorilla, annoyed with Mario, pulls his hat over his eyes and flings him into a wall. Later on, Mario begins to pick-up the mess made by the gorilla. While stacking pizza boxes, Mario is approached by Luigi in his gorilla costume; Luigi begins asking Mario if his costume looks okay, Mario simply responds that it looks terrible and begins to tell him off for wrecking the place.

A surprised Luigi begins to ask what Mario is talking about and in retaliation for Mario telling him off, Luigi starts to mock Mario's bunny costume. Eventually, Mario leaves to look for his bunny ears while Luigi starts cleaning up the place. As he is moving some trash, Luigi is approached by the gorilla. Thinking the gorilla to simply be Mario in a costume making fun of him, Luigi starts trying to tear the "costume" off of "Mario." Luigi is surprised to see that the fur he pulled off the gorilla was real and Luigi is left facing an extremely angry ape.

Mario finally returns and is has trouble figuring out which gorilla is the real one and which one is Luigi. Deciding to test which one is Luigi, Mario gives the gorillas a pair of pipes and tells them to fix them; before Luigi can do anything, the real gorilla simply twists its pipe into a knot.

Deciding to do another test, Mario asks a question only the real Luigi would know, "How many warts on Mama Mario's nose?" The gorilla, surprisingly, answers correctly. Frustrated with his inability to tell the gorillas apart, Mario simply leaves for the ball. As Mario leaves, Luigi gets the bizarre idea to take the gorilla as his date to the ball, hoping it "knows how to tango."
