Gold Mario is unlocked by either purchasing all three downloadable course packs as they become available or by purchasing the Season Pass, which unlocks him immediately. Unlike all other playable characters in the game, Gold Mario cannot collect power-ups. To make up for this shortcoming, for every yard that a hit golf ball travels, Gold Mario will collect one [[coin]]. Because of this, he is not playable in challenges that require the player to collect a certain amount of coins.
