Duck Hunt (known as Duck Hunt Duo in the PAL localization) is the name that refers to both the playable dog and duck fighters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. They are the three titular non-playable characters from the NES video game they are named after, Duck Hunt. People commonly mistake them as a duo but is really a Trio, The Dog, Duck and the player holding the gun according to Lady Palutena in Super Smash Bros for the Wii u. Duck Hunt's premise was to use the NES Zapper light gun accessory to shoot down ducks, and the dog would retrieve them and hold them up to award the player points. If the player missed their shot, the dog would laugh.

In the fourth installment of Super Smash Bros., they both act as one singular playable fighter, with the duck riding on the dog's back throughout the entirety of matches. Besides premiering as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the duo has also made other crossover guest appearances with the Mario series in other instances, mainly in the WarioWare series.

History
Super Mario Bros.
Though not appearing in the game itself, Super Mario Bros. was re-released multiple times, bundled with other games within the same cartridge. Two releases included a copy of Duck Hunt: 2-in-1 Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt and 3-in-1 Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet.

WarioWare series
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
A microgame called Duck Hunt appears, and has overall the same gameplay as the original NES game, this time having the player uses the Game Boy Advance controller to shoot ducks.

WarioWare: Twisted!
A Duck Hunt microgame similar to the one from WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! appears in WarioWare: Twisted!, this time using the Game Boy Advance cartridge's tilt sensor to aim.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase
The Duck Hunt microgame returns in the WiiWare game WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, and utilizes the Wii Remote's motion controls.

Tetris DS
Gameplay of Duck Hunt can be seen on the Nintendo DS's top screen in stage 19 of Standard Marathon mode in Tetris DS, where the dog and duck make a cameo. The dog also appears as a sprite on the touch screen during this stage.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
Duck Hunt appears as unlockable playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. Unlike other duo fighters, the dog and duck fight together as a singular fighter. Their moves include throwing a can (from the Nintendo Entertainment System game, Hogan's Alley) and the duck flying while holding the dog. Their Final Smash is a shootout of characters from some NES games that have used the Zapper Gun: Wild Gunman, Hogan's Alley, and Duck Hunt. The duo receives their own Duck Hunt themed stage simply called Duck Hunt. In the stage, the sprite versions of the dog and the ducks appear.

|These friendly fowl are the targets in the game Duck Hunt, which utilizes the Nintendo Zapper Light Gun. They appear and randomly fly about trying to escape after your faithful (if slightly clamorous) hunting dog flushes them out. Once you drop the ducks, your dog dutifully fetches them by the napes of their necks and grins at you.
