Crowns can be knocked off players as well, whether by enemies or other players, and give an additional 5,000 [[point]]s to players in possession of the crown at the end of a level.

If multiple players are tied for first place at the end of the level, nobody will receive a crown.

Crowns appear in ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' atop the icon of the current leader of a race or [[Battle Mode|battle]] on the course map. In ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe]]'', crowns are no longer seen in races but reappear in Battle Mode with a different design, appearing on the head of the current first-place driver or drivers, at which point they are visible both in the battle itself and on the course map, and they also serve as the icon for Battle Mode and replace [[Trophy|trophies]] from other modes on the mode's result screen, with free-for-all results screens showing the normal gold crown, a silver crown, or a bronze crown for first, second, or third place, respectively, and team-based battles using the gold crown to indicate the winning team. Just like trophies, crowns that appear on the results screen automatically rotate horizontally, with the player being able to use the control stick or touchscreen to speed crowns up, slow them down, or tilt them up or down. Additionally, in lobbies for online, local wireless, or LAN play in ''Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'', the [[Mii]] of the winner of the previous race or battle wears a crown. The crowns seen in ''Mario Kart 8 Deluxe'' have a [[Shine Sprite]] figure on the top, except when worn by [[Larry Koopa|Larry]], [[Lemmy Koopa|Lemmy]], or [[Iggy Koopa|Iggy]], in which case there is a hole on the top instead to make room for the tall hair of these characters.
